Veterinary Medicine and Surgery including a Preliminary Year BVM BVS with BVMedSci

Overview

Our preliminary year is for able students who do not have the required science qualifications for our five-year course but have high academic achievement in non-science and vocational subjects, or extensive experience.


You'll study integrated modules that show how basic science subjects interlink, including:


  • Animal biology
  • Animal care and behaviour
  • Chemistry

After successfully completing the preliminary year you'll automatically progress to our five-year Veterinary Medicine and Surgery course.

Entry Requirements

  • 32 points overall or 6,6,5 in three HL certificates
  • Must not have both HL chemistry and HL biology
  • IELTS: 7.5 (no less than 7.0 in any element)

English Language Requirements

  • As well as IELTS, we also accept other English language qualifications, including TOEFL iBT, Pearson PTE, GCSE, IB, and O level English.

Work Experience

  • You'll need a minimum of 5 weeks work experience, including:
    • A minimum of 3 weeks of animal handling
    • Up to 2 weeks of either customer-facing and/or teamwork experience
    • Up to 2 weeks for the completion of the Virtual Work Experience and Exploring the Veterinary Profession free online course.

Placements

  • On this course, subject to meeting the relevant criteria, you will undertake a compulsory placement year.
  • Placements cover:
    • All domestic species
    • Exotic animal medicine
    • Livestock production systems
    • Wildlife conservation

Additional Costs

  • You should factor in additional costs into your budget, alongside your tuition fees and living expenses.
  • The additional costs cover essential items you will need for the course, such as:
    • Health and safety equipment
    • Extra-mural studies (EMS)
    • Final year placements

Course Structure

Preliminary Year

  • All modules are mandatory
  • Modules include:
    • Chemistry: Compounds and Reactions
    • Introductory Maths (for preliminary veterinary students)
    • Veterinary Animal Care and Behaviour
    • Biology: Cell Structure and Biochemistry
    • Biology: An Introduction to Body Systems
    • Biology: Health and Disease
    • Chemistry: Atomic Structure and Bonding

Teaching Methods

  • We use a variety of teaching methods to help consolidate the theory and practical elements of the course.
  • Teaching is delivered using four main methods:
    • Lectures on key topics which will be further developed in self-study or practical sessions
    • Practical classes, with clinical skills, live animal experience, and lab work
    • Structured self-study time, which includes specific learning objectives, learning resources, and time limits.
    • Clinical relevance sessions which are problem-oriented, use clinical material or scenarios, and involve small-group, facilitator-led discussion.
