Introduction to the 4+1 Program in Meteorology/Atmospheric Science
The 4+1 Program in Meteorology/Atmospheric Science (BS/MS) at Rutgers School of Environmental and Biological Sciences allows students to obtain both BS (Meteorology) and MS (Atmospheric Science) degrees in five years. This is achieved by taking some graduate-level courses in their fourth year.
General Information
- The program enables students to complete their undergraduate and graduate degrees in a shorter timeframe.
- Students can apply for the program by sending a personal statement to the Undergraduate Program Director by the end of the spring semester of their second year of post-secondary study.
Requirements for Admission
Automatic Admission
To be automatically accepted into the program, students must meet the following requirements:
- Complete the following prerequisites with C's or higher by the end of the spring semester:
- 11:670:101 Introduction to Meteorology
- 11:670:102 Introduction to Climate Science
- 11:670:211 Meteorological Analysis
- 11:670:212 Computational Methods for Meteorology
- 01:640:151–152 Calculus for Mathematical and Physical Sciences
- 01:640:251 Multivariable Calculus
- 01:750:203–204 General Physics
- 01:750:205–206 General Physics Laboratory
- Complete 11:670:323 Thermodynamics of the Atmosphere in the fall schedule
- Have no more than 30 transfer credits
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher (including spring and summer courses of the second year)
Other Scenarios
If an applicant does not meet the requirements for automatic admission, the Graduate Program in Atmospheric Sciences Admissions Committee will consider the applicant's personal statement and other pertinent information to make a decision on admission to the 4+1 program.
Decision Timing
All applicants will be notified about acceptance into the program by the end of August.
Degree Requirements for Undergraduate (BS) Portion of 4+1
The requirements to receive the BS degree are the same as for any other student. However, because Tropical Meteorology and Air Quality Modeling are taken as part of the MS requirements, 4+1 students should take two other meteorology electives by the end of their fourth year to complete their BS requirements. Students who would like to pursue the Non-Thesis Option must choose Introduction to Atmospheric Chemistry and Hydrologic Processes as their two meteorology electives.

Final Examination
Near the end of each semester, GPAS conducts a comprehensive examination. A passing score at the Master's level constitutes the Final Examination for the non-thesis M.S. degree.
Course Sequence
The course sequence below lays out one path that meets the 4+1 degree requirements. Deviations from this path may also meet the requirements, but students are strongly recommended to meet with their academic advisors to discuss the ramifications of any such deviation.
Sequence for Students in Option-Based Curriculum
For the first three years, the recommended course sequence is the same as the recommendation for the Operational Meteorology option.
