Applied Meteorology and Climatology MSc

The Applied Meteorology and Climatology MSc program at the University of Birmingham is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand, model, and predict atmospheric processes. This course trains students to manage and use atmospheric data for various sectors, providing a strong foundation for careers in weather forecasting, environmental consultancy, air quality management, and academic research.


Course Overview

Weather and climate are integral parts of the Earth's system. The MSc Applied Meteorology and Climatology allows students to develop knowledge of processes key to understanding our interaction with the natural environment.


Course Structure

The course runs over 12 months in full-time mode, with the possibility of part-time registration. The exact course content may vary, but students can expect to study the following modules each semester:


  • Semester 1
    • Atmospheric Data Processing and Statistics (20 credits)
    • Practical Weather Forecasting and Communication (10 credits)
    • Physical Climatology and Climate Change (10 credits)
    • Theoretical Meteorology: Atmospheric Composition and Physics (20 credits)
  • Semester 2
    • Dynamics and Modelling of Weather and Climate (20 credits)
    • Physical Climatology, Climate Change and Applications (20 credits)

Course Highlights

This well-established degree was developed in response to industry and research institution requirements for applied meteorologists and climatologists. The program:

Course Delivery

The course includes a wide variety of learning and teaching, comprising 180 credits:


  • 120 credits from MSc-dedicated taught modules

  • Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation (20 credits) Dissertation options:
  • Dissertation with Placement (60 credits)
  • Dissertation/Research Paper (60 credits)

Entry Requirements

To gain a place at Birmingham, students must meet the general entry requirements and those specific to the course. A 2:1 Honours degree in a relevant discipline is required, such as Geography, Environmental Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, or Chemistry. International students must demonstrate a suitable level of English proficiency, usually through IELTS or equivalent qualification.


English Language Requirements

  • IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in any band
  • TOEFL: 80 overall with no less than 19 in Reading, 19 Listening, 21 Speaking, and 19 in Writing
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE): Academic 64 with no less than 59 in all four skills
  • Cambridge English: C1 Advanced - minimum overall score of 169, with no less than 162 in any component
  • LanguageCert ESOL SELT (UKVI): B2 'Communicator' with no less than 25 in each skill

Fees and Scholarships

  • Full-time: £11,250
  • Part-time: £5,625 The University offers a range of scholarships, including the Birmingham Masters Scholarships, which award £3,000 to over 300 students each year.

Application Process

The application deadline for UK and non-visa requiring applicants is 28 August 2026. Students can apply online and must submit supporting documents.
