Program Description:
This program combines in-depth study of languages with analysis of cultural and social phenomena. You’ll learn key skills in intercultural communication, such as observing, discovering, comparing, planning, and creating across many different cultural contexts. The program also features a strong focus on linguistics, providing you with a comprehensive understanding of the nature of language: how it is structured, how it has evolved, and how we use and understand it within our society.
Year Abroad:
This program offers an optional year abroad, allowing you to immerse yourself into the rich cultures and heritage of French-speaking countries. This will give you confidence in your French, and allow you to have valuable first-hand experiences of transcultural encounters.

- French Language and Cultures: Advanced
- Foundations of Meaning
- One Languages For All module or an elective module offered by another department
- At least one language option module (examples provided)
- Second-year linguistics modules in areas including phonetics and phonology, language variation and change, syntax, semantics, interaction, and psycholinguistics.
Year 3 (Abroad):
- Two overseas university study, teaching, or work placements
- Two assignments assessed on a pass/fail basis

- French Language and Cultures: Proficient
- Five option modules, at least one of which has to be a language option module (examples provided)

Assessment: You'll be assessed in a variety of ways, including essays, projects, written, oral, and listening exams. Assessments include formative work which will help you practice or develop skills, but will not count towards your final degree mark.
