About Program

Program Overview

The Mechatronics Engineering degree equips students with practical skills in designing and building mechatronics systems. Through project-based learning, they gain expertise in product development, optimization, and simulation, preparing them for high-demand careers in the engineering and industrial sectors. The program emphasizes hands-on activities, industry-relevant toolkits, and multidisciplinary skills in electronics and mechanical engineering, ensuring graduates are well-equipped for today's advanced engineering environment.

Program Outline

Outline:

  • Year 1:
  • Hands-on activities and learning about fundamental engineering topics, as well as concepts of design and project management.
  • Focus on materials and composites, manufacturing, and understanding of mechanical engineering concepts, as well as introductory mechatronics and electronics.
  • Design and manufacturing project to teach how to identify, analyze and assess engineering challenges, while developing the skills to critically appraise problems accurately and holistically from end to end.
  • Work with colleagues and build strong interpersonal, communication and project management skills.
  • Year 2:
  • Focus on a real-world product and holistic analysis of elements in design, development and manufacturing of the product.
  • Apply theoretical knowledge and practical skills to design a mechatronics product to solve a problem.
  • Learn to use various tool kits to design a mechatronics system.
  • Product development and quality project to learn the skills and tools needed to develop a product to meet required specifications and technical quality.
  • Take one of the Ruskin Modules, which give the opportunity to work with students from different courses to come up with creative solutions to complex problems and key challenges facing society.
  • Year 3:
  • Consider a product, conduct detailed analysis, and optimize its design.
  • Learn how to finalize a product and re-engineer it to completion where necessary.
  • Combine all the skills acquired in previous years to produce a finished product that is fit for purpose.
  • Develop various simulation and optimization skills to validate product design.
  • Learn other relevant skills in robotics and mechatronics systems control with a view to developing product optimization skills.
  • Carry out a major project, designed to develop autonomous research skills including collection and interpretation of data, research method design, academic writing, critical analysis, and synthesis.
  • Apply technical skills to solve a problem on own.

Assessment:

  • Ongoing assessment includes a combination of coursework, presentations, reports and some exams or in-class tests.
  • Structured, insightful feedback throughout the degree course.

Teaching:

  • Experienced tutors provide encouragement and feedback.
  • Personal Development Tutor from day one, who's there to support throughout the time at university.
  • Access support, should you need it, with study skills, careers advice, health and wellbeing, and more.

Careers:

  • High demand for graduates with skills in mechatronics engineering.
  • Work with smart technologies, robotic systems, automated systems, and computer aided manufacturing processes and systems.
  • Other roles could include product and prototype development, testing and installation of equipment, and engineering systems management.
  • Free Employability Service to help take practical steps to follow chosen career path, secure jobs and work experience, or even start own business.

Other:

  • Mechatronics engineering degree is designed to make students relevant in today’s fast-paced engineering and industrial world.
  • Gain practical skills and ability to design and build mechatronics systems on own as well as collaboratively.
  • Course is project-based and focuses on the use of engineering tool kits and product development from start to finish.
  • Analyze, develop, and optimize mechatronics systems and build multidisciplinary skills in electronics and mechanical engineering that, ultimately, will prepare to work in a broad range of sectors.
  • Opportunity to get hands-on and develop proficiency in design and manufacture, as well as valuable transferable skills that will distinguish in the workplace.
