Master of Science (Quality and Productivity Improvement)

The Master of Science (Quality and Productivity Improvement) program is designed to address the challenging issues of quality and productivity in the industrial environment. The program focuses on total management techniques, product quality improvement, and services, with an emphasis on the application of statistical methods.


Programme Structure

The program has a minimum study duration of 2 semesters (1 year) and a maximum of 4 semesters (2 years). The intake is twice a year, in March and October, subject to the UKM academic calendar.


Programme Modules

The program offers three modules:


  • Public Sector Module: This module focuses on quality assurance, standardization, and organizational performance measurement in the public sector.
  • Manufacturing Sector Module: This module emphasizes quality control, quality improvement, and supply chain management in the manufacturing sector.
  • Service Sector Module: This module concentrates on quality management, customer relationship management, and service delivery systems in the service sector.

Course Synopsis

The program includes the following courses:


  • STPD6024 Research Methodology: This course provides guidance on planning, implementing, and succeeding in scientific research.
  • STQK6114 Quality Assurance and Standardization: This course aims to give students knowledge on quality systems in organizations and their role in assuring quality in products and services.
  • STQK6124 Process Control and Quality Improvement: This course illustrates the importance of process control and quality improvement based on the 6Sigma concept.
  • STQK6134 Total Quality Management: This course introduces students to the concepts of Total Quality Management (TQM) from historical, philosophical, and practical aspects.
  • STQK6144 Organizational Performance Measurement: This course gives students knowledge on measuring an organization's performance, emphasizing Key Performance Indicators (KPI) and the Balanced Scorecard (BSC).
  • STQK6264 Supply Chain Management: This course explores the management of supply chains to improve an organization's overall supply efficiency.
  • STQK6324 Service Delivery System in the Public Sector: This course exposes students to the service delivery system of government agencies, including policies, regulations, and best practices.
  • STQK6514 Quality Management in Service Sector: This course explains the definition of customer service and service excellence, and introduces students to Customer Relationship Management (CRM).
  • STQK6524 Productivity Measurement: This course introduces the concept of measuring a firm's productivity, including productivity indicators and the DEA method.
  • STQK6534 Marketing Research Methods: This course discusses research in marketing, including scientific research methods, problem statement, research issues, and data analysis.
  • STQK6544 Quality Design and System Reliability: This course explores how statistics is used for controlling quality of product design and process in the manufacturing industry.
  • STQK6988 Research Project: This course involves a compulsory research project under the supervision of a supervisor, requiring students to conduct a research study and write a comprehensive report.

Entry Requirement

The entry requirements for the program are:


  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 or equivalent.
  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field with a minimum CGPA of 2.00-2.49 or equivalent, and a minimum of 5 years of working experience or research project in a relevant field.
  • Fulfillment of Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL A) for local candidates only, with specific requirements.
  • International students must obtain a minimum score in English proficiency tests such as TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE.
