Fellowship in Developmental Paediatrics (UKM)
Programme Overview
The Fellowship in Developmental Paediatrics (UKM) is a comprehensive training program designed to equip trainees with expertise in developmental paediatrics. The program is led by Course Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Norazlin Kamal Nor.
Duration of Training
The duration of the training is 3 years, with 2 years spent at the training centre in UKM and 1 year at an accredited centre for developmental training overseas, based on the current recommendation set by the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) for NSR certification.
Training Centres
The training centre for this program is Hospital Tunku Ampuan Besar Tuanku Aishah Rohani Hospital Pakar Kanak-Kanak, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Cheras 56000 Kuala Lumpur.
Eligibility
To be eligible for this program, applicants must:
- Hold a registered basic medical degree recognized by the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC)
- Be an accredited Paediatrician recognized by the Malaysian Paediatric Specialty Board
- For practitioners with MRCP/MRCPCH, have at least 18 months or more of general paediatric practice before embarking on specialty training, including at least 6 months in an accredited neonatal training centre and at least 6 months in general paediatrics
- For practitioners with local MPaed/MMed(Paed), have a further 6 months period in general paediatric training (to include 3 months in neonatology) in an accredited hospital under accredited trainers
- Be of suitable character and have a good work attitude, with references required from 2 Consultant Paediatricians
Objectives
The objectives of this program are to produce developmental paediatricians with competencies in the areas of development, disability, and behavioural paediatrics, and to equip trainees with the expertise to deal with both normal and abnormal child development and behaviour.
Objectives of Programme
The specific objectives of the program are to:
- Equip trainees with the expertise to deal with both normal and abnormal child development and behaviour
- Evaluate, counsel, and manage medical and psychosocial aspects of neurodevelopment problems
- Play an important role in advocacy for children with special needs in society
Activities/Task
Trainees will be required to:
- Perform all clinical activities at the level of a specialist
- Diagnose and manage neurodevelopmental cases, including taking complete history, complete physical examination, and detailed neurological, developmental, and functional assessment
- Formulate, apply, and continue to reappraise an appropriate management plan
- Communicate diagnoses and management plans effectively to families and other professionals
- Work in partnership with other professionals in health, education, social services, and towards child-centred care
- Write relevant letters and reports understandable to parents, professionals, and lay people
- Plan and evaluate services for populations of children with disabilities, including prevention and health promotion
- Teach and disseminate knowledge in health and non-health contexts
- Be a certified user of the Griffiths Mental Developmental Scales Extended Revised version or the Bayley Infant Development Scales III
- Keep a portfolio and an audit of their performance
- Meet regularly with the course director
- Join all clinical and academic activities of the Unit
- Conduct research during the training and publish at least 1 manuscript in a WOS journal or present at a local or international conference
Certificate of Completion
A Certificate of completion of training, certified by the Course Director and Dean, Faculty of Medicine UKM, will be given to all successful candidates.
Requirements
Applicants must:
- Apply at least 6 months before the intended start date
- Obtain a Temporary Practising Certificate (TPC) by the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC)
