Program Overview

The PKM364 Outdoor Recreation Design program is an 8-point subject that focuses on the design of outdoor recreation and ecotourism facilities. This program builds on existing knowledge in recreation or ecotourism to investigate the philosophy and background information associated with the design of ecotourism and outdoor recreation developments.


Subject Description

The subject aims to take students from an appreciation of the historical dimension of recreation/ecotourism design, through the philosophical dimensions of sustainability, to the design and development of a facility and its surrounding environment, as well as the formalized business planning requirements. On completion, students apply initiative, sound judgment, and problem-solving skills to address a range of problems and issues associated with the design of outdoor recreation and ecotourism facilities.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

  • be able to critically assess some factors influencing the application of sustainable design in real situations
  • have the ability to analyze, consolidate, and synthesize knowledge and data on sustainable design of facilities to make appropriate management decisions
  • have a variety of specialized planning skills associated with the design of outdoor recreation and ecotourism facilities
  • have the ability to use initiative, sound judgment, and problem-solving skills to address a range of problems and issues associated with the design and use of outdoor recreation and ecotourism facilities
