COM114 Presentation for Communicators

This subject provides an introduction to the study of communication and contemporary professional presentation practices. Mediated and non-mediated presentations are explored in workshops and students develop a range of presentation skills, which will be of value throughout the course and their career.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

• be able to present effective interpersonal, vocal and physical communication in mediated and non-mediated situations
• be able to produce presentations individually and in groups
• be able to reflect on their own communication styles, as well as those of others
• be able to reflect on audience needs and expectations and produce relevant communicative experiences
• be able to identify role and persona in a range of communication contexts
• be able to achieve appropriate levels of English language, literacy and numeracy to participate effectively in their university studies

• What is communication?
• Communication across cultures and time
• Communication via different media channels and live performance
• Use of language, voice and body in presentation
• Audience analysis and feedback
• Role and persona in communication
• Reflection skills
• Working in groups

Special Resources

Students utilise existing authentic learning environments in the School, such as drama studios and media centre facilities. Distance students will require access to equipment capable of recording and uploading video to the internet.
