HSC705 Health Science Portfolio and Exegesis

This subject is the final stage of the research/investigation component of the Doctor of Health Science. It is the culmination of the students' investigation/research of their professional practice and its context. Students prepare a portfolio with exegesis showing how their investigation has led to (or will lead to) changes in work practices and/or advancement of knowledge.


Subject Description

The portfolio will be prepared under the guidance of the principal supervisor, who will incorporate results (e.g., publications/reports) prepared as part of HSC703 and be assessed externally in accordance with University regulations. As an AQF level 10 subject, students will be expected to display systematic and critical understanding of a specific discipline in their chosen area of professional practice. The graduate will be a leading expert and practitioner in their field of research. The subject will cover the following topics: Undertake an individual health science based research project in a chosen area of professional practice, Deliver presentations of the research outcomes, Prepare and submit for assessment a professional portfolio on an area of research/investigation, under the guidance of their supervisors.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:


  • Be able to demonstrate an expert level of theoretical knowledge and be able to critically reflect on that knowledge and its application
  • Be able to systematically and critically evaluate relevant literature, philosophical approaches, data collection and apply analysis techniques in the broad research field
  • Be able to develop a research hypothesis or question that is soundly embedded in the context of the current body of knowledge in the field
  • Be able to demonstrate research, analytical, critical, reflection and communication skills through research outcomes such as seminar presentations, publications and portfolio/exegesis submissions
  • Be able to apply their knowledge and expertise to write and submit a portfolio and exegesis in accordance with CSU guidelines and expectations
  • Be able to demonstrate independent study and problem solving skills

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:


  • Undertake an individual health science based research project in a chosen area of professional practice
  • Deliver presentations of the research outcomes
  • Prepare and submit for assessment a professional portfolio on an area of research/investigation, under the guidance of their supervisors. The portfolio will be the culmination of their investigation/research and show how the study has influenced the profession, for example by changes in work practices or advancement of knowledge. All previously prepared publications and reports will be incorporated into the portfolio.
