NRS115 Care of Infants

This subject reviews the activities of the living child from 38 weeks gestation until 18 months. Students examine the special needs of the biological mother of the baby and issues related to care-giving.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:


  • understand the changes physical, mental and social that infants undergo from the last weeks of gestation until the age of eighteen months
  • understand the power of the media in portraying positive and negative messages about parenting behaviours
  • discuss aspects of antenatal care and childbirth practices that have a bearing on the subsequent health of children
  • advise parents on optimal ways of caring for their infant, basing that advice on your knowledge of infant growth and development

  • Module 1: Growth and development of infants
  • Module 2: Parental influences on infant health and care
  • Module 3: Issues in infant health and care
