Introduction to JST321 Justice Studies Workplace Learning

JST321 Justice Studies Workplace Learning is a subject that utilizes an integrated workplace learning approach, allowing students to develop a critical understanding of criminal justice organisations and their role in civil society. Through a 70-hour workplace placement, students will gain hands-on experience and familiarity with the daily workings, concerns, and processes of these agencies and organisations, including both government and non-government entities, and their relationship to social policy development and justice processes in civil society. This subject is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the criminal justice system and its various components, enabling them to navigate interactions with government and non-government organisations effectively and ethically, and to reflect critically on their workplace learning experiences, demonstrating an understanding of the relationship between theory and practice in the field of justice studies and criminal justice processes in civil society, and to develop professional competence and awareness in all communications and conduct with academic staff and other students, and through presentation of assignments, in accordance with professional and ethical standards of practice in the justice field and related organisations in civil society, including government and non-government sectors, and their role in the provision of justice and social welfare policies in civil society, and the development of interventions in the delivery of justice, and the negotiation process required to find an appropriate work placement in a justice-related organisation, and the practical requirements for successfully completing a 70-hour placement in a justice-related organisation, and identifying and understanding professional and ethical standards of practice, and the ways justice is utilised by organisations, and the development of justice priorities for organisations, and the development of interventions in the delivery of justice, and debriefing and critical reflection after placement, and the roles of government and criminal justice agencies in the development of criminal justice and social welfare policies in civil society, and the negotiation process required to find an appropriate work placement in a justice-related organisation, and the practical requirements for successfully completing a 70-hour placement in a justice-related organisation, and identifying and understanding professional and ethical standards of and the assessment items, which include an initial, low-weighted 'Preparation for Placement' prior to placement, and two further assessments after completion of placement that explain the workplace learning role and situate the placement organisation in the larger justice-related field, and the learning outcomes, which include the ability to explain the development of professional competence and
