PHS308 Physiotherapy in Adult Neurological Practice

Subject Description

This subject provides students with the knowledge, problem-solving, and practical skills to holistically assess and develop management plans for adults with movement disorders arising from changes in the neurological and related musculoskeletal systems. Students are expected to have a substantive level of background knowledge of biomechanics, normal movement, neuroscience, exercise physiology, and principles of motor control.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

• be able to plan and apply a range of physiotherapy assessment and evaluation techniques using tests, tools, and outcome measures relevant to neurological physiotherapy practice
• be able to demonstrate and articulate sound clinical reasoning processes which explore, explain, and analyse assessment findings
• be able to plan safe and effective physiotherapy intervention for neurological physiotherapy practice
• be able to justify situations in which physiotherapy intervention is no longer required and if relevant, identify future management options
• be able to demonstrate professional and ethical behaviour appropriate to neurological physiotherapy practice
• be able to communicate effectively with clients and relevant others in the planning and implementation of neurological physiotherapy
• be able to reflect on professional practice to determine the actions they need to undertake to continually improve; to recognise situations outside their competence; and to take timely and appropriate action
• be able to locate, evaluate, and use evidence-based information to inform decision making and develop and guide their own knowledge, learning, and practice

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:

• Theoretical foundations of physiotherapy in neurological rehabilitation assessment and treatment in neural and non-neural components of movement disorders in adults
• Theoretical foundations of physiotherapy in neurological rehabilitation practice in functional movement areas
• Concepts of client-centred practice
• Functional and collaborative goal setting for adults within the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework
• Assessment tools for measurement of movement and function in adults with musculoskeletal and neurological disorders
• Investigations and imaging related to neurological rehabilitation practice
• Communication strategies for use with adults with communication impairments, their families, and their carers
• Motor learning and control
• Assessment and treatment of movement impairments as a result of acute and chronic neurological conditions
• Evidence-based practice in neurological physiotherapy
