EHR311 Advanced Human Exercise Physiology

This subject applies physiological principles to explain acute responses to exercise and chronic adaptations to training, with emphasis on the muscular and cardiovascular systems. The laboratory component is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to conduct standard physical fitness assessments, which are applicable for employment in clinical, corporate, and community fitness programs, as well as exercise and sports science research.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:


  • be able to display the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to successfully undertake standard fitness testing
  • be able to perform a clinical evaluation of resting performance and exercise tolerance
  • be able to display the theoretical knowledge and practical skills of basic pathology
  • be able to display the theoretical knowledge and practical skills of basic histology
  • be able to perform a clinical evaluation of blood and urine chemistry

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:


  • Theoretical and practical skills for the evaluation of resting performance and exercise tolerance for pulmonary function, cardiac function, muscle strength, and body composition
  • Basic pathology techniques such as venipuncture and blood and urine analysis
  • Introduction to histological analysis of contractile tissue

Residential School

This subject contains a 3-day Compulsory Residential School. It is compulsory for online study students to attend a three-day Residential School scheduled during the Residential School period. This Residential School is necessary in order to develop practical skills to meet learning outcomes and comply with accreditation requirements.


Special Resources

  • Travel to and accommodation are required for distance education students attending the compulsory residential school at a CSU campus
  • All students are required to have a lab coat, safety glasses, and covered footwear for lab-based practicals
