First Episode Psychosis (FEP) Program
About
The UNLV Health-Mojave Counseling First Episode Psychosis (FEP) Program was developed in January 2020, in collaboration with the State of Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health. The program is modeled after the evidence-based NAVIGATE program and provides comprehensive, early, and effective treatment to individuals who have experienced a first episode of psychosis. Services began in May 2020.
Services Provided by the First Episode Psychosis Team
The program assists individuals and their family members in navigating a first episode of psychosis by providing education on psychosis and resiliency/coping skills, and helping individuals stabilize their psychotic symptoms. The program focuses on supporting individuals in maintaining interpersonal relationships, achieving educational and employment aspirations, and improving their quality of life.
The FEP program utilizes a multi-dimensional treatment approach, including:
- Pharmacologic management/psychiatric medication services
- Family education services
- Individual resiliency training (IRT) therapy services
- Supported employment and education (SEE) services
- Case management services
- Primary care collaboration
Eligibility Requirements
Target Population
The program targets individuals:
- Aged 15-44
- Who have experienced symptoms meeting DSM-5 criteria for schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders, including:
- Brief psychotic disorder
- Schizophreniform disorder
- Schizophrenia
- Schizoaffective disorder
- Other specified schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorder
- Unspecified schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorder
- With an onset of psychotic symptoms less than five years in duration at the time of enrollment
- Who have not been treated with antipsychotic medication(s) for more than 12 months total in their lifetime
- With an IQ of 80 or greater and no developmental and/or intellectual disability
- Residing in the Clark Behavioral Health Region in Southern Nevada
Exclusions
The following DSM-5 diagnoses are excluded:
- Bipolar and related disorders
- Depressive disorders
- Substance/medication-induced psychotic disorder
- Psychotic disorder due to another medical condition
- Clinically significant head trauma or other serious medical condition(s)
How to Access the Program
Community providers can refer individuals to the FEP program. Referrals require the following information:
- Individual's name
- Date of birth
- Insurance (if applicable)
- Address
- Telephone number(s)
- Parent/guardian information (if applicable)
- Psychiatric treatment history
