PhD in Arts

The PhD in Arts is a doctoral program designed for students with a humanistic profile, an interest in subjects related to the disciplines included under the heading of Philosophy and Letters, intellectual interest, and a critical, historical, and humanistic-social understanding of the complexity and problems of contemporary societies.

Objectives and Competences

The program aims to provide students with more specialized training by doing a PhD thesis in one of the lines of research included in these fields of knowledge or any other related field, methodological and instrumental tools for research in the Humanities and Social Sciences.

Access and Admission

Student Profile

In general, students should have a humanistic profile, an interest in subjects related to the disciplines included under the heading of Philosophy and Letters, intellectual interest, and a critical, historical, and humanistic-social understanding of the complexity and problems of contemporary societies.

General Requirements

1. As a general rule, to gain access to an official doctoral programme, it is necessary to hold an official Spanish bachelor's degree, or equivalent, and a Master's degree, or equivalent, provided that at least 300 ECTS credits have been completed in total between these two levels of education.
2. Additionally, the following individuals may also gain access:

• Those who hold official Spanish university degrees or equivalent Spanish degrees, provided that at least 300 ECTS credits have been completed in total between these levels of education and a level 3 of the Spanish Qualifications Framework for Higher Education can be demonstrated.
• Those who hold a degree obtained in accordance with foreign educational systems within the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), without the need for recognition, that certifies a level 7 of the European Qualifications Framework, provided that this degree qualifies the individual for access to doctoral studies in the country where it was issued.
• Those who hold a degree obtained in accordance with foreign educational systems outside the EHEA, without the need for recognition, after verification by the university that it certifies a level of training equivalent to that of the official Spanish Master's degree and qualifies the individual for access to doctoral studies in the country where the degree was issued.
• Those who hold another Doctoral degree.
• Likewise, university graduates who, after obtaining a training position through the corresponding specialized health training entrance exam, have successfully completed at least two years of training in a program to obtain the official title of one of the specialities in Health Sciences may also gain access.

Phases

Access

• The Admissions Unit of the Students Service manages and validates the pre-enrolment applications for the PhD programmes.
• It checks the compliance with the general requirements that any applicant must have.
• It processes applications for the equivalence of degrees if the access degrees are from outside the EHEA.

Admission

• The Academic Committee of the PhD programme studies and resolves the pre-enrolment applications according to the established PhD programme description.
• This Committee shall assess the compliance with the specific requirements established by each programme.

Enrolment

• Only those who obtained a favourable decision in the previous phases shall be able to enrol.
• Admitted applicants must formalise their enrolment within the deadlines established annually in the enrolment calendar.
