Introduction to HACK-4-SAGES
HACK-4-SAGES is a four-day hybrid hackathon dedicated to digital twins in astrobiology, an interdisciplinary field of science that seeks to answer one of humanity's most fundamental questions: how did life originate on Earth and how common might it be in the universe?
Astrobiology and Digital Twins
Astrobiology combines astronomy, biology, chemistry, physics, and advanced computer modeling to study the origin of life, conditions for its development, methods for detecting biosignatures, and the potential habitability of planets and moons beyond Earth. The interdisciplinary nature of astrobiology makes it one of the most dynamically developing fields of modern science, ideal for the application of digital twin methods.
Hackathon Challenges
Participating teams can choose one of three scientific challenges:
- Origins of Life
- Life Detection & Biosignatures
- Exoplanet Habitability
Event Details
The event will take place from 913 March 2026 and can be attended online or in-person at one of 12 partner institutions, including the Warsaw University of Technology. Detailed information about the event location will be provided soon.
Participation and Benefits
Participation is free. For participants attending in-person, meals and refreshments will be provided during the hackathon. The main prize includes a trip to ETH Z僡ich to present the project to prominent astrobiology researchers.
Organizers and Support
HACK-4-SAGES is organized by ETH Z僡ich in cooperation with partners, including the Warsaw University of Technology and Gdask University of Technology. The project is funded under the ENHANCE alliance and European Union funds.
Eligibility
First-degree students can form teams of 2-4 members. Each team submits a brief project description. Sixty teams will be selected (20 in each category).
Mentors
Ph.D. students and academic staff can participate as mentors, supporting teams and sharing knowledge, which will also be an opportunity to expand international academic networks.
