Anthropology BA Program

The Anthropology BA program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of human beings and their cultures across time and space. Anthropology is a unique field that combines elements of social science and natural science, and students will find themselves in various settings, including fieldwork, labs, and classrooms.


Program Overview

Anthropology is the scientific study of human beings and their cultures. It is about how the human species came to be, how it developed myriad ways of living in the world, and how those ways may change in the future. The program is closely associated with archaeology and offers students a broad range of courses and research opportunities.


Course of Study

To complete the Anthropology BA program, students must complete 120 credits, including 75 credits in the College of Letters & Science and 36 of the 75 credits in L&S upper-level courses. The College requires that students must complete in residence at UWM at least 15 credits in upper-division courses in their major.


University General Education Requirements

Students must complete the University General Education Requirements, which include:


  • Oral and Written Communication: ENGLISH 102 (College Writing and Research) and a course designated as OWC-B
  • Quantitative Literacy: MATH 102, MATH 103, MATH 105, MATH 108, MATH 111, or PHILOS 111
  • Arts: 3 credits
  • Humanities: 6 credits
  • Social Sciences: 6 credits
  • Natural Sciences: 6 credits (at least two courses, including one lab)
  • UWM Foreign Language Requirement: two years of a single foreign language in high school or two semesters in college
  • UWM Cultural Diversity Requirement: one course from the Arts, Humanities, or Social Sciences that satisfies the Cultural Diversity requirement

College of Letters & Science Requirements

The College of Letters & Science requires that students complete:


  • The International requirement: three credits of language other than English at the 3rd semester level or above, or non-language courses with L&S approved international content
  • The Breadth requirement: 6 credits each in L&S courses designated as L&S Humanities, L&S Natural Sciences, and L&S Social Sciences breadth
  • The Research requirement: a research experience approved by the L&S faculty
  • The Language other than English requirement: the fourth semester of university work or equivalent in one language other than English

Anthropology Major Requirements

The Anthropology major requires 36 credits within the department, including:


  • Required courses: ANTHRO 101, ANTHRO 102, ANTHRO 103, and ANTHRO 460
  • 9-15 credits satisfying the methods, research, and subfield requirements
  • 6-15 additional ANTHRO credits

Anthropology BA Learning Outcomes

The learning outcomes for the Anthropology BA program include:

  • Ability to communicate clearly in writing and speech
  • Ability to design and execute research in at least one anthropological subfield
  • Ability to engage in ethical reasoning and demonstrate civic knowledge

Advising

The College of Letters & Science offers advising services to students, including college advisors and faculty advisors. College advisors assist students in defining their academic and life goals, creating an educational plan, and understanding curriculum and degree requirements. Faculty advisors mentor students in the major and assist them in maximizing their development in the program.

Honors and Awards

The College of Letters & Science offers several honors and awards, including the Dean's Honor List, Honors College Degree, and Commencement Honors. Students who earn a cumulative GPA of 3.500 or above may receive all-university commencement honors and be awarded the traditional gold cord at the December or May Honors Convocation.
