Master of Social Sciences (MSocSc) in Contemporary China Studies

Programme Information

The Master of Social Sciences (MSocSc) in Contemporary China Studies is a self-financed programme offered by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The programme aims to provide students with a critical understanding of contemporary China from political, historical, economic, geographical, and sociological perspectives.


Objectives

The programme is designed to accomplish the following objectives:


  • To provide students with a critical understanding of contemporary China from multiple perspectives.
  • To sharpen students' awareness of the complex relationships between historical, economic, geographical, political, and sociological factors in China through a multidisciplinary approach.
  • To enhance students' understanding of the processes of change that will shape future relationships between Hong Kong, the rest of China, and the world.

Programme Structure

  • Units Requirement: 27 units
  • Required Courses: 3 units
  • Concentration/Field and Elective Courses: 21 units
  • Research Methods: 3 units
  • The programme has four concentrations:
    1. Economic Development and Reform
    2. History and Culture
    3. Society and Community
    4. Urban Development and Environmental Management

Admission Requirements

Academic Qualification

  • Applicants should hold a bachelor's degree or a qualification of equivalent standard from another university or comparable institution.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with a background in social sciences and/or humanities.

Language Proficiency Requirement

  • Applicants should meet the English proficiency requirement.
  • Applicants should have a bachelor's degree from a university in Hong Kong or an English-speaking country, or submit one of the following original score reports/certificates for assessment:
    • TOEFL minimum score: 79 (internet-based)
    • IELTS (academic): band score of 6.5 or above
    • College English Test (CET 6): 450 or above
  • Note: Test results provided should be within two years from the date of issuance of the Admission Offer letter. TOEFL iBT Home Edition or IELTS Indicator test is not accepted.

  • Frequency of Intake: Once a year, admission in September.
  • Tuition Fee: HK$197,200/programme
