Applied Learning Courses
The Applied Learning Courses offered by the School aim to provide a choice of elective subjects as part of the New Senior Secondary (NSS) Curriculum. These subjects focus on broad professional and vocational fields in which students may have a future career interest.
Course Features
The unique features of the Applied Learning Courses are:
- allows students to deepen their understanding in a broad area in which they have a strong interest, with a view towards possibly developing their interest into a lifelong career.
- enables students to learn fundamental theoretical knowledge as well as practical and generic skills in their area of interest.
- provides a more holistic education in the New Senior Secondary Curriculum by teaching a wide range of competencies such as analytical, problem-solving, and presentation skills together with interpersonal skills like team work, communication skills, and a positive attitude towards lifelong learning.
- adopts a variety of teaching methods to motivate students to learn, including small group coaching, mentorships, company visits, simulation exercises, workshops, group games, role play, and project work.
Course Description
The course is designed to develop students' knowledge and understanding of Hong Kong law enforcement operations, criminology, criminal law, and the criminal justice system. Students interested in or who aspire to join the law enforcement, disciplined forces, or legal-related professions in the future would find the course content highly useful and practical.
Course Structure
The course systematically delivers relevant knowledge on crimes, criminal justice, law enforcement operations, and the hiring and work contexts of disciplined forces and other law enforcement work. The course structure consists of 8 modules:
- Introduction to Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice System (24 hours)
- Law Enforcement Agencies in Hong Kong (24 hours)
- Basic Criminology (24 hours)
- Legal Principles of Law Enforcement (30 hours)
- Recruitment and Selection of Disciplined Forces in Hong Kong (21 hours)
- Conduct and Attributes of Law Enforcement Officers (21 hours)
- Law Enforcement Work in Hong Kong (18 hours)
- Health and Fitness of Law Enforcement Officers (18 hours)
Venue and Fees
The course is offered in two modes:
- Mode 1: HKBU(SCE) Learning Centres
- Mode 2: Students' own school The course fee will be fully subsidized by the Education Bureau, and students do not need to pay.
Further Studies and Career Pathways
The course can lead to further studies in fields such as policing studies, disciplined services management, criminology, and legal studies. Potential career pathways include police constable, immigration assistant, fireman, assistant correctional officer, and front-line investigator.
Application Method
All students must apply through their schools for enrollment in Applied Learning courses. Schools may consider nominating students for Applied Learning courses in light of the school's curriculum plan and students' needs. Thus, students who are interested in enrolling in Applied Learning courses need to obtain their school's nomination for the application. The application results will be subject to the selection results from course providers.
