Master of Education

Introduction

The Master of Education (MEd) allows a pathway for current teachers, educational professionals, counsellors, and leaders to gain a master's level qualification examining practice and critical issues in education.


Why Study a Master of Education at UC?

  • The MEd is an ideal qualification for those who have already undertaken some postgraduate study to achieve research-informed teaching and leadership in their educational setting.
  • Option to study in a specialised area of education, ranging from Digital Education Futures to Special and Inclusive Education.

Entry Requirements

To gain entry into a Master of Education in New Zealand, you will need to have a bachelor's degree (or an equivalent degree) with a major in Education or a related subject with a B grade average; or have any Aotearoa New Zealand university degree and a professional teaching qualification. If English is not your first language, you are also required to meet UC's Postgraduate language requirements.


Degree Structure

The Master of Education is made up of 180 points, which includes coursework in either a subject endorsement or can be unendorsed. The degree takes 18 months full-time, or up to 4 years part-time. You can begin studies in February, July, or November.

You can choose to complete the MEd unendorsed, or endorsed in one of the following options:

  • Teaching and Learning Languages
  • Tertiary Teaching

Fees

Domestic Students

  • 2025 tuition fee estimate: $13,013 (180 points) ($8,675 per 120 points)
  • 2026 tuition fee estimate: $13,794 (180 points) ($9,196 per 120 points)

International Students

  • 2025 tuition fee estimate: $55,200 (180 points) ($36,800 per 120 points)
  • 2026 tuition fee estimate: $57,300 (180 points) ($38,200 per 120 points)
  • 2027 tuition fee estimate: $60,300 (180 points) ($40,200 per 120 points)

Student Services Levy (SSL)

  • 2025 SSL: $9.72 per point ($1,166.40 per 120 points)
  • 2026 SSL: $10.30 per point ($1,236.00 per 120 points)

Further Study

You could go on to a Doctor of Education, or onto a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Education.
