نظرة عامة على البرنامج

Introduction to Geography

Geography is the study of human behaviour, the environment we live in, and the relationship between both. This field combines arts and sciences to find innovative solutions to our society's most pressing issues and debates, and the human response to these challenges, such as climate change, poverty, sustainability, health, and inequality.

Program Structure

The study of geography involves exploring different pathways, including:

  • Physical geography
  • Human geography
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Resource and environmental management Practical workshops, labs, and fieldtrips are used to examine geographical processes outside of the classroom, including urban mobility and planning. Students will also have the opportunity to undertake research with community partners that supports resilient environments and communities through research.

Courses

The geography major in the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science requires the completion of the following courses:

  • 100-level: Two 100-level GEOG courses
  • 200-level: Three 200-level GEOG courses
  • 300-level:
    • GEOG309 Research for Resilient Environments and Communities (30 points)
    • 30 points of 300-level GEOG courses There is a range of courses at 200 and 300-level, allowing students to specialise within or combine courses from the theme pathways.

Specialisation and Postgraduate Studies

If students are interested in postgraduate studies in Geography, they will need to take at least another 30 points from 300-level GEOG courses. For those completing a double major in Environmental Science, GEOG309 will count towards their Environmental Science major, and they will need to complete an additional 60 points of 300-level GEOG courses towards the Geography major.

Minor in Geography

The minor in Geography requires the completion of 75 points in 100 to 300-level GEOG courses, with at least 45 points above 100-level. This minor can be taken in conjunction with a range of undergraduate degrees, including Bachelor of Arts, Commerce, Digital Screen, Health, Product Design, Psychological Science, Science, Social and Environmental Sustainability, Sport, or Youth and Community Leadership.

Career Opportunities

Geography is a distinctive field between science and arts that also has links to law, sociology, engineering, computer science, and health sciences. Due to this diversity, study in Geography will lead to a range of career opportunities, including:

  • Climate or environmental consultant
  • Resource manager
  • Urban or transport planner
  • Geospatial scientist
