Introduction to Data Science

Data Science is an emerging field that combines Computer Science, Mathematics, and Statistics with other disciplines. Studying Data Science at the University of Canterbury, you will learn to understand and analyse data, and communicate your findings for the best possible decision-making.

• Investigate the many sources and applications of data in healthcare, business, transport, and economics.

• The Bachelor of Data Science includes compulsory Data Science courses and allows students to major in areas such as Data Science, Bioinformatics, Business Analytics, Computational Linguistics, Population Health Data Science, or Spatial Data Science.

Data Science Major

To complete a Data Science major, students must take the following courses:

• 100-level: Any 100-level course at UC
• 200-level:
  • COSC265 Relational Database Systems
  • One course from STAT211–299
• 300-level:
  • COSC367 Artificial Intelligence
  • DATA309 Data Science Capstone Project
  • STAT315 Multivariate Statistical Methods In addition to these major requirements and the compulsory Bachelor of Data Science courses, students can select additional electives from a range of 200-level and 300-level courses across various disciplines to achieve a total of 360 points.
