Academic Skills

The Academic Skills Centre at the university offers a range of programs to support students in their academic journey. One of the key skills emphasized is critical thinking, which is essential for excellence at the university level.

Critical Thinking

Critical thinking is a skill that enables students to navigate the vast amounts of information in the world around them. It sets them on the path to excellence at university and gives them the ability to critically engage with readings and research.

Session One: Evaluating Ideas

This session focuses on teaching students to identify key arguments, assess evidence, and evaluate the credibility of sources. By the end of this session, students will be equipped with the skills to critically engage with readings and research.

Session Two: Generating Ideas

In this session, students learn to analyze issues from a range of perspectives and generate connections between ideas. These skills will enable them to develop a critical understanding of a topic or assignment task.

Tutors

The tutors for the critical thinking program are Michael Weiss and Dominique Holland.

Dates and Times

The program is offered in two terms:

  • Term 3 Workshop: Tuesdays, from 11:00 am to 11:50 am
    • Dates: 22 July, and 29 July
  • Term 1 Workshop: Wednesdays, from 1:00 pm to 1:50 pm
    • Dates: 25 February, and 4 March

It is recommended that students enroll for the whole course, but they are also welcome to attend individual sessions if they wish. Even if workshops are fully booked, there may still be space available on the day.
