The University of Canterbury offers a Study Abroad programme, which allows international students to enroll in various courses for a semester.

Science South Island Weekend Experience

As part of this programme, students can apply to participate in the Science South Island Weekend Experience. This experience takes students on a guided tour of Canterbury and the West Coast, providing an in-depth look at the region's unique landscape and science.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Science South Island Weekend Experience, students must:

1. Be enrolled in the UC Study Abroad programme.
2. Enroll in at least two science courses for their Study Abroad semester at UC.
3. Meet the application deadlines and requirements.

Cost and Application

The Science South Island Weekend Experience is free, including accommodation, food, and travel for the weekend. However, students need to bring their own sleeping bag. Applications open in November for Semester 1 and in March for Semester 2.

Itinerary

The weekend experience includes:

• Learning about Canterbury's glacial braided rivers and pastoral plains.
• Exploring the West Coast's rugged natural beauty and dipping toes in the Tasman Sea.
• Gaining insight into how Aotearoa New Zealand was formed and the forces that created this landscape.
• Staying at the University of Canterbury's Cass field station.
• Experiencing the distinctive limestone boulders of Kura Tawhiti | Castle Hill.
• Venturing into native beech forests.
• Traveling along the Great Coast Road.
