Introduction to the University Program
The university program in Spanish language offers a comprehensive education in the language, literature, and culture of Spain and Latin America. The program is divided into two main parts: basic studies and advanced studies.
Basic Studies
The basic studies in Spanish language consist of 25 credits and focus on the fundamental structures and vocabulary of the language. The program aims to enable students to produce and understand Spanish language both orally and in writing, as well as to introduce them to the main literary and cultural trends in Spain and Latin America.
Course Structure
The basic studies consist of five courses, each worth 5 credits:
- Espanjan kielen valinnaisten opintojen lähtötasokoe ( Entrance exam)
- Fonetiikka, ääntäminen ja suullinen esitys (Phonetics, pronunciation, and oral presentation)
- Kirjallinen esitys ja käännös suomi-espanja (Written presentation and translation from Finnish to Spanish)
- Kielioppi I (Grammar I)
- Espanjan historia ja kirjallisuus (Spanish history and literature)
- Latinalaisen Amerikan historia ja kirjallisuus (Latin American history and literature)
Admission Requirements
Admission to the basic studies requires a proficiency in Spanish language equivalent to level B3 or higher. Students must also pass an entrance exam to be admitted to the program.
Advanced Studies
The advanced studies in Spanish language consist of 35 credits and aim to deepen students' knowledge of the language, literature, and culture of Spain and Latin America.
Course Structure
The advanced studies consist of compulsory and elective courses. The compulsory courses are:
- Suullinen ja kirjallinen esitys (Oral and written presentation)
- Espanjan kielioppi II (Grammar II)
- Espanjan lähihistoria ja kirjallisuus (Modern Spanish history and literature)
- Latinalaisen Amerikan lähihistoria ja kirjallisuus (Modern Latin American history and literature)
- Nykyespanja ja variaatio ajallisesti ja maantieteellisesti (Contemporary Spanish and variation in time and space)
Elective Courses
Students can choose two elective courses, each worth 5 credits, from the following options:
- Käännös espanja-suomi (Translation from Spanish to Finnish)
- Espanja vieraana kielenä (Spanish as a foreign language)
- Galician kielen alkeet (Introduction to Galician language)
- Tekstien lukeminen ja ymmärtäminen (Reading and understanding texts)
- Nyky-Espanjan yhteiskunta ja politiikka (Contemporary Spanish society and politics)
- Kieliharjoittelu (Language practice)
Admission Requirements
Admission to the advanced studies requires completion of the basic studies in Spanish language (25 credits).
