Program Overview
The Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) interventions for mental health professionals (psychosis) program is designed to develop knowledge and skills in the use of CBT for the treatment of psychotic experiences. This 20-credit module can be studied at degree and masters level, focusing on the development of in-depth knowledge and skills in CBT informed approaches.
Key Features
- The module will increase knowledge and enable students to develop effective skills in the use of CBT for psychosis (CBTp) informed skills.
- It will focus on the development of in-depth knowledge and skills in the use of CBT informed approaches, with a focus on supporting people experiencing psychosis.
- The module includes effective assessment, formulation, and the development of therapeutic relationships and skills required for the effective and adaptable use of CBTp informed skills in psychosis.
- There will be a focus on reflective practice and workplace-based cases to ensure clinical relevance.
Module Details
Degree Level (HEAD351)
- Credits: 20
- FHEQ level: Level 6 bachelors degree
- On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate systematic and current knowledge and critical understanding of the diagnostic classification and characteristics of psychosis.
- Critically appraise the features of assessment and formulation and treatment using a CBTp informed approach.
- Demonstrate effective skills in and analyse own performance of the assessment, formulation, and treatment of psychotic type experiences using CBTp informed approaches.
- Critically analyse the role of the therapeutic relationship in CBT for psychotic experiences.
- Critically analyse the theory and development of cognitive and behavioural models for treating psychosis.
Masters Level (APP781)
- Credits: 20
- FHEQ level: Level 7 masters degree
- On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate systematic, in-depth, and current knowledge and critical understanding of the diagnostic classification and characteristics of psychosis.
- Provide a comprehensive and critical analysis of the features of effective assessment and formulation and treatment using CBTp informed approaches for psychosis.
- Demonstrate effective and advanced skills in and analyse own performance of the assessment, formulation, and treatment of psychotic type experiences using CBTp.
- Provide an advanced critical analysis of the role of the therapeutic relationship in CBTp for psychotic experiences.
- Provide an advanced critical analysis of the theory and development of cognitive and behavioural models for treating psychosis.
Assessment
- The assessment for both modules requires students to submit a reflective account critically examining their understanding of CBTp informed practice, drawing on the evidence base including expert by experience perspective.
Module Dates
- The module will be delivered face-to-face, with the first and last days online.
- Dates: 7, 14, 21, 28 May, 4, 11, 18, 25 June 2026
Programmes
- The degree-level module can be studied as a standalone module or as an optional module towards the BSc (Hons) Professional Development in Mental Health and the BSc (Hons) Professional Development in Health and Social Care.
- The masters-level module can be studied as a standalone module, as a pathway specific optional module towards MSc Advanced Clinical Practitioner in Mental Health, or as an optional module towards another MSc Advanced Professional Practice pathways.
Entry Requirements
- To undertake these modules, students must be:
- A registered health and social care practitioner or health and social care worker working in an area of clinical practice that will allow them to meet the module learning outcomes.
- In possession of previous study at level 5 (Diploma of Higher Education) or a foundation degree to study the module at degree level.
- In possession of previous study at degree level to study the module at masters level.
