Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology

The Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology is a mainstream allied health profession concerned with the delivery of exercise, lifestyle, and behavioural modification programs for the prevention and management of chronic disease and injury. Murdoch graduates of the Exercise Physiology course will possess the skills and ability to provide physical activity and behavioural programs for clients with conditions as diverse as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, depression, cancer, arthritis, respiratory disease, and many others.


Overview

Exercise Physiology is a profession that focuses on the delivery of exercise and lifestyle programs to prevent and manage chronic diseases and injuries. Graduates of this course will have the skills to provide physical activity and behavioral programs for clients with various conditions.


Admission Requirements

  • Entry into this course is restricted to those with a course weighted average of 60 in previous study and meet one of the following criteria:
    • Registered as an Accredited Exercise Scientist with Exercise and Sports Science Australia
    • Completed a course accredited at the level of Exercise Science with Exercise and Sports Science Australia within the last five years
    • Undertaken a Graduate Entry Assessment by Exercise and Sports Science Australia to the satisfaction of the Academic Chair
  • For Murdoch graduates, completion of B1317 with a double major in Movement Science and Sport and Health Science OR, B1348 OR B1352 meets the requirements for point 2 above
  • English language requirements: Equivalent of an Academic IELTS overall score of 6.0 with no band less than 6.0

Learning Outcomes

  1. Justify the mechanisms through which exercise can improve the health of clinical populations
  2. Undertake clinical practice that implements the scope of practice of an Accredited Exercise Physiologist and appropriate referral pathways based on an understanding of the Australian Health System
  3. Identify and use appropriate assessment tools for specific populations, correctly interpret the results, and communicate them to relevant stakeholders in an appropriate manner
  4. Develop and deliver exercise programs for clients with pathology or injury
  5. Communicate utilizing appropriate formats and language to clients, caregivers, health professionals, as well as to meet the legal reporting requirements of the profession
  6. Utilise Evidence-Based Practice by evaluating the scientific literature, client needs, and clinical environment to create best practice exercise interventions for clients with pathology or injury

The course consists of 36 credit points, including:


  • EXS501: Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation (3 cp)
  • EXS502: Metabolic Rehabilitation (3 cp)
  • EXS503: Neuromuscular Rehabilitation (3 cp)
  • EXS504: Advanced Topics in Exercise Physiology (3 cp)
  • EXS505: Clinical Research in Exercise Physiology (3 cp)
  • EXS590: Research Methods for Exercise Science (3 cp)
  • EXS602: Workplace Injuries and Prevention (3 cp)
  • EXS603: Exercise Physiology Practicum (12 cp)
  • EXS604: Allied Health Professional Practice (3 cp)

Professional Outcomes

  • Graduates of this course are eligible to apply to register with ESSA as an Accredited Exercise Physiologist
  • This course is accredited by Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) at the level of Exercise Physiology
