MJ-PHT - Photography

Overview

The Photography major provides students with a comprehensive set of practical photographic and digital imaging skills in combination with theoretical knowledge to enable them as photographers to develop their vision and progress their career as creative professionals. Students will have their creative practice informed and enriched by an in-depth study of the power and meaning of image within a cultural-historical context. Throughout the major, students develop a thorough understanding of critical photographic design and theory and learn how to apply this at a practical level in their work. Students will develop strong technical photographic and lighting skills through the rigorous development of numerous photographic graphic design projects. In addition, students will be equipped with contemporary network and marketing skills key to their success as creative producers.

As per normal undergraduate admission requirements.


English Language Requirements

Equivalent of an Academic IELTS overall score of 6.0 with no band less than 6.0.

  1. Demonstrate a broad and coherent understanding of the theoretical perspectives and methods of enquiry of Photography and apply them in a range of contexts.
  2. Demonstrate effective written and oral communication with a range of audiences, producing creative work consistent with the contemporary norms and standards of Photography and its related industries.
  3. Gather, synthesise and critically evaluate creative content, ideas, and information.
  4. Employ a variety of strategies and methods for research and practice appropriate to Photography and related industries with a capacity for independent enquiry and lifelong learning.
  5. Demonstrate adaptability by applying creative, technical and critical thinking skills to address complex problems with critical evaluation of their own work and creative process.
  6. Demonstrate interpersonal and collaborative skills with the capacity to work effectively within team environments and when using shared resources.
  7. Demonstrate ethical thinking and practice through social and creative enquiry.
  8. Demonstrate an understanding of the commercial context and changing nature of the creative industries, and their role as a creative professional within them.
  9. Possess an understanding of Global historical shifts in key social ideas, communication and visual meaning.
  10. An understanding of the power and meaning of image and its cultural historical context.
  11. An understanding of the diversity of approaches and voices in the making of the still image and the multiple perspectives which find expression.
  12. Proficiency in producing considered arguments (written and verbal) in response to cultural/social/historical issues, particularly as they apply to visual communication.
  13. Critical thinking, the ability to articulate concepts and the assurance to participate in the key debates in Photographic discourse.
  14. Visual literacy in media production developed by Immersion in photographic culture; image and discourse and engagement with semiotic, cultural and aesthetic critiques.
  15. Proficiency in a range of technological skills central to Photography (camera, lighting, image post production etc.).
  16. The capacity to create powerful and effective photographic communication appropriate to a range of audiences and genres.
  17. The confidence to express independent vision and voice.
  18. Analytical, creative and conceptual thinking.
  19. A variety of methods for research and practice appropriate to Photography.
  20. A capacity for self-directed independent enquiry and production critical self-reflection.

Upon entering the industry, you can apply to join various associations such as the Australian Photographic Society (APS), Image Makers Association Australia (IMAA), or Pro Photography WA.
