Aviation Technology

The Aviation Technology program is offered by the College of Rural Alaska, Tanana Valley Campus. This program leads to an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree for individuals aspiring to a career as a professional pilot.


Degree Requirements

The minimum requirements for the A.A.S. degree in Aviation Technology are 60 credits. The requirements include:


  • General university and A.A.S. requirements:
    • Communications: ENGL 111X and ENGL 211X, 212, or 213X (6 credits), COMM 131X or 141X (3 credits)
    • Mathematics or Natural Science: a math or natural science course at the 100 level or above (3 credits)
    • Humanities, social sciences, mathematics, natural science, or Perspective on the Human Condition (3 credits)
  • Major degree requirements:
    • AVTY 100 -- Private Pilot Ground School (4 credits)
    • AVTY 101 -- Private Pilot Flight Training (2 credits)
    • AVTY 102 -- Commercial Ground Instruction (3 credits)
    • AVTY 103 -- Commercial Flying (2 credits)
    • AVTY 155 -- Preventive Maintenance for Pilots (3 credits)

Minor in Aviation Technology

The minor in Aviation Technology provides students with an opportunity to become familiar with the field of aviation, with particular emphasis on the use of aviation as a tool and economic process within the Alaskan environment. The requirements for the minor include:


  • Foundation Courses (7 credits): AVTY 100 -- Private Pilot Ground School or AVTY 111 -- Fundamentals of Aviation, AVTY 117 -- Aviation Weather (3 credits)
  • Core Courses (6 credits): AVTY 231 -- Arctic Survival (3 credits), AVTY 305 -- Aviation Law (3 credits)
  • Elective Courses: choose three credits from the following courses:
    • AVTY 301 -- Air Worker Strategies (3 credits)
    • AVTY 302 -- Aerial Data Collection (2 credits)
