University of Alaska Fairbanks: Oceanography Program

The University of Alaska Fairbanks offers a comprehensive Oceanography program through the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences. This program provides students with the opportunity to pursue Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in various concentration areas of oceanography.

Program Overview

The Oceanography program is both interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary, focusing on processes that influence the ocean's circulation, composition, biological productivity, and geology. Students considering graduate study in oceanography should have a strong background in physics, chemistry, biology, geology, or mathematics, and a working familiarity with the other subjects.

Graduate Program -- M.S. Degree

The M.S. degree in Oceanography requires a minimum of 30 credits. The program offers concentrations in:

  • Biological Oceanography
  • Chemical Oceanography
  • Fisheries Oceanography
  • Geological Oceanography
  • Physical Oceanography To complete the M.S. degree, students must:
    1. Submit GRE scores.
    2. Complete the general university requirements.
    3. Complete the master's degree requirements.
    4. Complete one of the following concentrations:
    • Biological, Chemical, Geological, Physical:
      1. Complete the following courses:
      • MSL F620: Physical Oceanography (3 credits)
      • MSL F630: Geological Oceanography (3 credits)
      • MSL F650: Biological Oceanography (3 credits)
      • MSL F660: Chemical Oceanography (3 credits)
      • MSL F692: Seminar (3 credits)
      • MSL F699: Thesis (open)
      • Electives (open)
      1. Minimum credits required: 30 credits
    • Fisheries:
      1. Complete the following courses:
      • MSL F620: Physical Oceanography (3 credits)
      • MSL F630: Geological Oceanography (3 credits)
      • MSL F640: Fisheries Oceanography (4 credits)
      • MSL F650: Biological Oceanography (3 credits)
      • MSL F660: Chemical Oceanography (3 credits)
      • MSL F692: Seminar (3 credits)
      • MSL F699: Thesis (open)
      • Electives (open)
      1. Minimum credits required: 30 credits

Graduate Program -- Ph.D. Degree

The Ph.D. degree in Oceanography requires a minimum of 18 credits. To complete the Ph.D. degree, students must:

  1. Submit GRE scores.
  2. Complete the general university requirements.
  3. Complete the Ph.D. degree requirements.
  4. Complete course work equivalent to the M.S. degree. Note: There are no fixed course requirements, nor is an M.S. degree required to earn the Ph.D. degree. However, a candidate for the Ph.D. degree in oceanography will be expected to have completed course work at least equivalent to that required for the corresponding M.S. degree.

Research Opportunities

The School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences provides opportunities for laboratory and field work, including:

  • Laboratories in Fairbanks, the Seward Marine Center, Kasitsna Bay, the Juneau Center, and the Fishery Industrial Technology Center in Kodiak
  • Research vessels operated by the institute and school, including the R/V Little Dipper
  • Laboratory facilities, including a seawater system at Seward and a variety of modern and analytical instrumentation

Admission and Support

Students are admitted to the graduate program in marine sciences and limnology based on their ability and the capability of the program to meet their particular interests and needs. Applications are considered throughout the year, but students should apply by March 1 to have the best chance for admission and financial support for the subsequent fall semester. Assistantship stipends are awarded competitively, and limited fellowship support is available. Most students are supported on research projects that relate directly to their degree research.

Accreditation

The University of Alaska Fairbanks is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.
