University Program: Geophysics

The Geophysics program is offered by the College of Science, Engineering and Mathematics, Department of Geology and Geophysics. The program offers two degrees: Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.).

Degrees and Requirements

  • The M.S. degree requires a minimum of 30 credits.
  • The Ph.D. degree has an open credit requirement.
  • The program has two concentrations: Solid-Earth Geophysics and Snow, Ice and Permafrost Geophysics.

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the program, students must:

  • Complete a background in geology and geophysics at least to the level of a B.S. concentration.
  • Complete any deficiencies concurrently with the degree.
  • Acceptance into the Snow, Ice and Permafrost Geophysics concentration is open to students with strong physical science or engineering backgrounds.
  • Complete the general university requirements.
  • Complete the master's degree requirements.

Program Requirements

Students must:

  • Complete and pass a written comprehensive examination.
  • Complete at least 15 credits at the 600-level (not thesis or research).
  • Complete and submit a written thesis for approval by the student's committee.
  • Complete 6 credits of the following geophysics core requirements:
    • GEOS 602: Geophysical Fields (3 credits)
    • GEOS 620: Geodynamics (3 credits)
    • PHYS 645: Fundamentals of Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (3 credits)
