Introduction to the Landscape Visual Impact Assessment (LVIA) Module

The University of Limerick, in collaboration with GreenTech Skillnet, offers a 7-week online micro-credential in Landscape Visual Impact Assessment (LVIA) for renewable energy projects. This module is part of the Master in Sustainability and Climate Futures pathway and is designed for professionals in planning, sustainability, environmental consultancy, and policy.

Programme Content

During this module, participants will:


  • Explore the principles and methodologies of LVIA in the context of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).
  • Learn to apply industry-standard guidelines (e.g., GLVIA) and use spatial technologies such as GIS and Remote Sensing.
  • Analyse real-world case studies of wind farm and renewable energy projects.
  • Develop strategies for impact mitigation, including green infrastructure integration.
  • Gain hands-on experience in presenting LVIA findings using professional visual tools.
  • Engage in collaborative learning and critical reflection on emerging trends such as climate change and digital technologies.

Entry Requirements

To be successful on this course, applicants should:


  • Hold a bachelor's degree (NFQ Level 8) with at least a second-class honours, grade 2 (2:2) in a relevant discipline such as Geography, Environmental Science, Architecture, Engineering, or Urban Planning.
  • Alternatively, applicants with a lower result or an unrelated qualification may be considered on a case-by-case basis if they can provide evidence of 3 or more years of professional experience in environmental assessment, planning, or related fields (Recognition of Prior Learning).
  • Previous experience with GIS or spatial analysis tools is an advantage.
  • Alternative Entry Route applicants may be required to submit a portfolio to demonstrate their technical experience and may also be required to undertake an interview.
