Microbial Genomics Workshop

Course summary

Get hands-on practical experience on next-generation sequencing (NGS) and its applications in clinical microbiology during this one-day workshop in London at the University of Westminster. Learn step-by-step how to easily and effectively analyze and manage NGS data generated by modern sequencing technologies.

The course is aimed at those with an interest in the applications of next-generation sequencing technologies in diagnostic microbiology.

Course structure

  • Introduction to NGS and their applications in clinical microbiology (lecture)
  • Working with NGS data: Raw sequence data and quality control (computer lab)
  • Outbreak investigation using NGS (lecture)
  • De novo assembly: From raw reads to whole genome (lecture & computer lab)
  • From assembled genomes to detection of antibiotic resistance in bacteria, monitoring resistance in HIV and HBV, detection of virulence genes, detection of mobile genetic elements (MGEs) such as plasmids, bacteriophages.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  • Understand NGS and its applications in clinical microbiology
  • Understanding NGS data: Reading raw sequence data and quality control
  • Interpret outbreak investigation using NGS
  • Identify microbial resistance

Our Tutors

Dr Manal Mohammed holds PhD in Medical Microbiology from the University of Liverpool, UK. Manal's research interests include application of next-generation sequencing technologies and associated bioinformatics analysis tools in investigating the molecular basis of virulence of non-typhoidal salmonellosis in humans and understanding the complex dynamics of bacteria-phage interaction.

Dr Manal Mohammed is also a fellow at the Higher Education Academy. She teaches Microbiology, Medical Microbiology and Microbial Genomics across a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate modules.

Location

This course is taught both online and on Campus at our Cavendish Campus in central London, within easy walking distance of Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road.
