Accounting – Business

Program Overview

Accounting is often referred to as the universal language of business. Durham College’s Accounting – Business program is the next step towards a career in the field of accounting. Learning from industry-connected professors, you will develop your knowledge of accounting using the latest tools and technology to gain the skills employers need. You will be exposed to QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Desktop, Sage 50 and Profile. You also have the opportunity to earn Microsoft Office specialist certifications.

Admission Requirements

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or Mature Student Status

Program Details

Used in a wide variety of organizations, accounting involves measuring business activities; processing information into financial reports and statements; and communicating information to appropriate decision-makers. To meet the wide range of accounting employment opportunities, Durham College incorporates a variety of simulations into the courses to help prepare students for the workplace. Students will be exposed to QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Desktop, Sage 50, and Profile. Courses include:

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Record financial transactions in compliance with Canadian Generally Accepted Accounting Principles for sole proprietorships, partnerships, private enterprises, publicly accountable enterprises, and non-profit organizations.
  2. Prepare and present financial statements, reports, and other documents in compliance with Canadian Generally Accepted Accounting Principles for sole proprietorships, partnerships, and private enterprises.
  3. Contribute to recurring decision-making by applying fundamental management accounting concepts.
  4. Prepare individuals’ income tax returns and basic tax planning in compliance with relevant legislation and regulations.
  5. Analyze organizational structures, the interdependence of functional areas, and the impact those relationships can have on financial performance.
  6. Analyze, within a Canadian content, the impact of economic variables, legislation, ethics, technological advances, and the environment on an organization’s operations.
  7. Outline the elements of an organization’s internal control system and risk management.
  8. Contribute to recurring decision-making by applying fundamental financial management concepts

Industry Partners

  • Students can also earn the following globally recognized certificates by taking Microsoft Office Specialist exams as part of their computer courses:
    • Microsoft Office Specialist: Word Associate (COMP1209)
    • Microsoft Office Specialist: PowerPoint Associate (COMP1209)
    • Microsoft Office Specialist: Excel Associate (COMP2209)
    • Microsoft Office Specialist: Excel Expert (if applicable currently will be offered in Accounting and Supply Chain programs)
  • Students who successfully pass all three exams can earn an extra certificate that recognizes their accomplishment with the Microsoft Office Specialist: Associate (Office 365 and Office 2019) certificate.
  • DC students are provided access to Microsoft Office 365 through the college’s Microsoft Office account.
  • By enrolling in Accounting - Business, you will be aligned with Canada’s largest and fastest-growing certifying body of bookkeepers. Graduates will have the opportunity to fast-track toward the nationally recognized Certified Professional Bookkeeper (CPB) designation.

Program Transfer, Degree Completion and Additional Credentials

  • As a graduate, you can apply to return for a third year to complete the Accounting – Business Administration three-year Ontario College Advanced Diploma.
  • Subject to additional education and training requirements, you may be eligible to apply your credits towards other related certifications, including:
