Selected Studies in Education B.S.

Be a change-maker in education, policy, technology, law, counseling and more while exploring a wide variety of issues with a global, justice-oriented lens.

Curriculum

Find your passion by exploring a wide range of education-related topics, due to the flexible nature of selected studies in education, guided by one of five focus areas.


Focus Areas

  • Cultural Foundations of American Schooling: Schooling and Diversity: Learn the theory and practice of culture, race, class, gender and other issues as they intersect with education.
  • Pre-Teaching:****Study of Teaching, Learning, and Inclusion: Learn about teaching and student learning in early childhood, elementary and/or secondary education, with an emphasis on diversity, disability and inclusion in schools.
  • Education, Technology, and Media: Learn about integration of technology and media into education and other places where learning happens, including media literacy.
  • Post-Secondary and Human Services Fields: Learn about fields such as higher education, counseling, student affairs and international education, and non-teaching education roles, with an emphasis on social services’ impact on individuals, families and communities.
  • Physical Activity: Sport, Coaching, and Recreation: Learn about leading physical activities for individuals and groups with an emphasis on adapting for athletes with and without disabilities.

Extracurricular Opportunities

  • Experience the World: Study Abroad
    • Take part in School of Education short-term study abroad trips or semester programs around the world. School of Education students are eligible for exclusive funding to support study abroad experiences.
  • Professional Honor Society: Kappa Delta Pi
    • Join the student-led Alpha Delta Iota chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, the international honor society in education for professional development, fellowship and service opportunities.
  • Explore Social Justice: Spector/Warren Fellowship
    • This fellowship brings students interested in education to the Holocaust Museum Houston each year, where they learn from experts, firsthand accounts and survivors, gaining the tools to integrate the lessons on the Holocaust and human rights into any classroom subject.
