About this course
An in-depth understanding of Computer Science is a key enabler of social mobility enabling children of all backgrounds access to rewarding and well-paid careers. Every child deserves to be taught by expert teachers who know not only their subject in detail but more importantly how to teach it.

Our vision is to develop skillful and resilient teachers who are experts in Computer Science pedagogy, we focus on subject-specific knowledge, up-to-date teaching practices which are based on the most recent research, and, most importantly, your specific needs as a trainee teacher.
On successful completion of this degree and having met the Teachers’ Standards, you will be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). All our PGCE Secondary courses lead to the award of a level 7 Postgraduate Certificate in Education.

Learning and teaching
- Assessment methods: Our strategy
- At the end of each placement your school mentor, who will have supported you throughout your time in school, will assess your practice, using evidence from the whole of your time in school, including observations, lesson plans and marked work.
- You’ll complete a progress portfolio to collate evidence of your teaching practice. At the end of the course, we will use this evidence to show that you have met the Teachers’ Standards.
- You’ll also complete two level 7 Master’s assignments to test your ability to be critically reflective and research-led in your approach to teaching.
Entry requirements
- A good honours degree (usually a 2:2 or above) with a significant proportion in Computer Science. Please note that applicants with third-class honours degrees will be considered on an individual basis, and normally only if applicants have additional qualifications and/or significant relevant professional experience.
- GCSE Grade 4 (or C or accepted equivalent) in English Language or English Literature and Mathematics. If you do not already have the appropriate GCSEs, or if you are unable to provide proof of your grades, please refer to the GCSE Equivalency information below.
- The ability to read effectively and communicate clearly and accurately in spoken and written standard English.
- Suitable personal and intellectual qualities required for teaching in secondary schools.
- Applicants also need to demonstrate the commitment, attitudes and values appropriate to those of a secondary teacher and the potential to train as a teacher. Strong applicants often have experience in secondary schools, but this is not a requirement.

- Leeds Trinity University does not offer scholarships for teacher training courses for international students. International applicants will need to ensure that they have sufficient funds to self-fund their study in the UK.
Catholic Certificate in Religious Studies (CCRS)
- Achieve an additional qualification alongside your PGCE with the Catholic Certificate in Religious Studies.
- Although the CCRS isn't compulsory, it is recognised across the Catholic school sector as a desirable qualification that can expand on both your expertise and your vocational focus. The course aims to ensure you have the basic knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the beliefs and principles of the Catholic Faith while providing a basis for further study.

PGCE Computer Science with ICT (Leeds Trinity University)
Degree Overview:
This program prepares individuals to become skilled and confident secondary school teachers (ages 11-16) specializing in Computer Science and ICT. The program emphasizes Subject-specific Knowledge, modern teaching practices based on research, and individual needs as a trainee teacher. Upon successful completion, you will receive a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
Key objectives:
- Develop expertise in Computer Science pedagogy.
- Acquire up-to-date teaching skills and practices.
- Gain confidence and practical experience through two school placements.
- Learn and apply pedagogical knowledge to effectively teach the curriculum.
- Develop strong subject knowledge in Computer Science and ICT.
Structure:
The program comprises two stages:
Stage A (Introduction to teaching):
- University-based training: 2 weeks induction, followed by 3-day school placement increasing to 4-day placement.
- Professional Education Studies: Introduction to important topics and issues relevant to teaching and professional values.
- Subject knowledge and applied pedagogy (SKAP): In-depth learning of the subject and how to effectively teach it.
Stage B (Developing knowledge and preparing for new career):
- University-based training: Continued SKAP sessions (every other Friday).
- School-based training: Full-time placement in a different school from January to June.
- Targeted support and training: Assistance with securing the first teaching job and further development of teaching skills. ### Outline:
Stage A:
- Introduction to the role of a teacher and essential skills.
- Exploration of the curriculum, teaching strategies, and assessment methods in Computer Science and ICT.
- Development of lesson planning, classroom management, and student engagement techniques.
- Observation and analysis of experienced teachers in action.
- Reflective practice through written assignments and peer discussions.
Stage B:
- Deepening knowledge of subject and pedagogical content through university sessions.
- Full immersion in classroom teaching with increased responsibilities and independent practice.
- Feedback and mentorship from experienced teachers and university tutors.
- Continued development of reflective practice and professionalism.
- Preparation for professional job applications and interview skills.
Individual Modules:
- Professional Education Studies: Covers diverse topics like child development, classroom management, legal aspects of teaching, inclusive education, and assessment.
- Subject knowledge and applied pedagogy (SKAP): Focused on the Computer Science and ICT curriculum, effective teaching strategies, assessment techniques, and resources for specific age groups. ### Assessment:
- Ongoing formative assessment through observations, lesson plans, marked work, and feedback.
- Summative assessment at the end of Stage B against the Teachers’ Standards.
- Two Level 7 Master’s assignments focusing on critical reflection and research-informed approaches to teaching. ### Teaching:
- Emphasis on active learning, collaboration, and reflective practice.
- Expert lecturers with extensive experience in Computer Science and education.
- Individual support through tutorials, feedback, and guidance from dedicated tutors.
- Opportunities to learn from and observe experienced teachers in different school settings.
- Access to digital tools and resources for enhancing learning and teaching. ### Careers:
- Teaching in secondary schools: specializing in Computer Science and ICT.
- Leadership roles in education: Head of Department, Assistant Headteacher, etc.
- Further study: Master's degree in Education or a related field. ### Other:
- The program offers an additional Catholic Certificate in Religious Studies (CCRS) for those interested in Catholic school settings.
- Strong focus on developing personal qualities and values suitable for a secondary school teacher.
- Opportunities to participate in research projects and conferences related to Computer Science education.
