Degree Overview:

The Foundation Year in Media provides students with the opportunity to develop technical, creative, and academic skills across a range of media platforms, including graphic design, screenwriting, marketing, branding, video production, digital photography, and blogging. Students are encouraged to situate their own media production within established traditions and styles while beginning to identify their storytelling voice and signature style. They are also introduced to the significance of the creative industries within the UK economy and are encouraged to begin positioning themselves within this growing and exciting, but competitive, sector.

Outline:

The Foundation Year in Media is designed to help students build basic media-making skills ahead of starting a full undergraduate media-related degree at Solent. The program is structured to acclimatize students to the university experience and provide a supportive environment for returning to studying.

Core Modules:

• Belonging (Media Design): Students learn to present complex creative ideas in visual and compelling ways, work collaboratively, become a student of the university, and meet with staff from their progression course.
They are eased into the process of exploring and accessing good quality sources of information in a variety of ways.
• My Place in the Creative Industries (Media Industries): By undertaking their own research about the branch of the creative industries they want to work in, students begin to build an understanding of the nature of work and employment in the sector.

Teaching:

The teaching team for the foundation year is made up of lecturers who also teach on the degree courses. The program provides face-to-face academic support throughout, complemented by 24/7 access to the University's virtual learning environment. Students have immediate access to the University's media production store, where they can borrow equipment for their assessments and personal projects free of charge. The course also provides hardware training, especially photography DSLRs and video cameras. There is also training on audio recording equipment and free access to relevant facilities and microphones. In the course of the year, students also receive hands-on training with relevant software packages, most notably video, photography, and graphic design post-production software.

The Foundation Year in Media is designed to help students build basic media-making skills ahead of starting a full undergraduate media-related degree at Solent. Graduates of the program may pursue careers in a variety of media-related fields, such as:
