Program Overview

The University of Strathclyde offers a BA Hons Law & Economics program, which provides students with a comprehensive understanding of law and economics. The program is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in a variety of careers, including government, commerce, and industry.


Program Structure

The program is a four-year course that allows students to study law and economics in a combination that suits their interests and career goals. The first year of the program provides a broad-based introduction to the subjects, with students studying three subjects, including law and economics. In the second, third, and fourth years, students can choose from a wide range of options, including human rights, environmental law, criminal law, and public international law.

The program covers a wide range of topics, including:


  • Law: Constitutional Law, Legal Processes & Systems, Public Law 2, Domestic Relations, Commercial Law, Involuntary Obligations: Delict & Unjustified Enrichment, Property Trusts & Succession, EU Law, Law, Film & Popular Culture, Legal Theory, Housing Law, International Private Law, Competition Law, Discrimination Law, Ethics & Justice, Internet Law, Crime & Punishment, Human Rights Law, Employment Law, Banking Law & Finance, Intellectual Property Law, Public International Law, and Local Government Law.
  • Economics: Introduction to Economics, Intermediate Microeconomics, Macroeconomics 2, Topics in Microeconomics with Cross Section Econometrics, Macroeconomics 3, Microeconomics 4, Macroeconomics 4, Introduction to Econometrics, Economics of Firms & Industries, Industrial Economics, Applied Econometrics, Financial Development & Economic Growth, and Behavioural Economics.

The program uses a variety of assessment methods, including:

Learning and Teaching

The program is delivered by leading academics through a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops, and webcasts. The teaching aims to help students develop knowledge and understanding of the principles, nature, and development of law and legal institutions in Scotland and in other jurisdictions.


Entry Requirements

The standard entry requirements for the program are:


  • Highers: AAAA (first sitting) or AAAAB (second sitting), including English and at least one other social science subject, plus National 5 Maths or Application of Maths at B to C.
  • A Levels: ABB-BBB
  • International Baccalaureate: 32-30
  • Irish Leaving Certificate: Two H2 passes and three H3 passes, including English
  • HNC: Year 1 entry: Social Sciences A in Graded Unit; Maths National 5 B, or equivalent
  • International students: View the entry requirements for your country.

Fees and Funding

The tuition fees for the program are:


  • Scotland: £1,820
  • England, Wales & Northern Ireland: £9,535
  • Republic of Ireland: If you are an Irish citizen and have been ordinary resident in the Republic of Ireland for the three years prior to the relevant date, and will be coming to Scotland for Educational purposes only, you will meet the criteria of England, Wales & Northern Ireland fee status.
  • International: £21,550
  • University preparation programme fees: International students can find out more about the costs and payments of studying a university preparation programme at the University of Strathclyde International Study Centre.

Careers

Graduates who have studied law and another discipline may find openings in government services, commerce and industry, banking and insurance, management and administration, where knowledge of the legal implications of business practice is of value. Some graduates continue to an accelerated graduate LLB degree, usually with the aim of entering the legal profession. Economics graduates are employed in a wide range of areas, including the Government Economic Service, management, investment analysis, and media outlets.
