Bachelor of Arts in Voice

The Bachelor of Arts in Voice is a four-year undergraduate degree program offered by the University of Limerick. This program is designed for vocalists who wish to advance their vocal training and performance practice.


About the Course

The program allows students to develop a range of skills for professional vocal performance in various contexts. Students will also develop their scholarly knowledge and inquiry through engaging academic studies focused on singing and artistic practice in educational, social, community, and health settings.


Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this program, applicants must hold at the time of enrollment the established Leaving Certificate (or an approved equivalent) with a minimum of six subjects, which must include two H5 (Higher level) grades and four O6 (Ordinary level) grades or four H7 (Higher Level) grades. Subjects must include Mathematics, Irish or another language, and English.


Audition Process

The audition for the BA Voice program will be conducted either online or in person. Applicants will be required to perform two contrasting songs, and the audition criteria will include vocal ability, technical skills, overall performance quality, and experience and motivation.


Course Structure

The program is divided into four years, with each year consisting of two semesters. The course structure includes a combination of core modules, elective modules, and cooperative education.


Core Modules

  • MD4101 - Performance 1A: Develops core skills with one-to-one vocal classes, sight singing, conducting, theory, and keyboard classes.
  • MD4091 - Irish World Academy Practicum C1: Engages students in ensemble work with in-house and visiting tutors.
  • MU4001 - Critical Encounters with Irish Music and Dance: Introduces students to current research engagements with native Irish music and dance traditions.
  • MU4011 - Critical Encounters with World Music and Dance: Introduces students to diverse music traditions from around the world.

Year 2 Modules

  • MD4103 - Performance 3A: Develops core skills with one-to-one vocal classes, sight singing, conducting, theory, and keyboard classes.
  • MD4092 - Irish World Academy Practicum C3: Engages students in ensemble work with in-house and visiting tutors.
  • MU4023 - Voice Studies: Historical and Cross Cultural Perspectives: Introduces students to the interdisciplinary academic field of voice studies.
  • MD4113 - Performing Arts Technology: Introduces students to professional audio and visual technologies relevant to performers.

Year 3 and 4 Modules

  • Cooperative Education: Students engage in real-world, professional environments.
  • MD4137 - Performance 6A: Develops core skills with one-to-one vocal classes, sight singing, conducting, theory, and keyboard classes.
  • MD4147 - Irish World Academy Practicum C6: Engages students in ensemble work with in-house and visiting tutors.
  • MD4157 - Irish World Academy Final Year Project 1: Prepares students for an extended research project.

Electives

In addition to core modules, students can choose from a range of elective modules in dance and music, and other subjects outside of the performing arts.


Career Opportunities

This program prepares students for various career paths, including professional performance, performing arts facilitation, postgraduate studies, work in cultural institutions, media-related positions, archival work, performance production, and portfolio careers.


Fees and Funding

Student course fees are broken into three components: Student contribution, Student Levy, and Tuition Fees. The current student contribution is set at 2,500, and the Student Levy is 104. Tuition fees vary depending on residency, citizenship, and course requirements.


Scholarships

Various scholarships are available, including the All Ireland Scholarships, Bursary for my Future Scholarship, Civic Engagement Scholarship, and Cooperative Education Award.


Follow-on Study

Graduates can pursue further study in programs such as the Master of Arts in Irish Traditional Dance Performance, Master of Arts in Irish Traditional Music Performance, and Master of Arts in Ethnomusicology.

The program has produced graduates who have gone on to pursue successful careers in the music and performing arts industry. One such graduate, Yordanka (Dani) Tegarkova, chose the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at the University of Limerick due to its reputation and atmosphere. She found the program to be a leap of faith, but it changed her life in ways she never imagined.
