Process and Chemical Engineering

The Process and Chemical Engineering degree is a four-year or five-year integrated Master's program that provides students with a comprehensive education in engineering fundamentals, process and chemical engineering principles, and industry-relevant skills.

Course Outline

The program begins with a broad education in engineering fundamentals in the first year, followed by specialization in Process and Chemical Engineering from the second year onwards. The curriculum includes modules such as:

  • Engineering Mechanics with Transform Methods
  • Numerical Methods and Programming
  • Fluids
  • Communication in Engineering
  • Solid and Structural Mechanics
  • Plant Design and Commissioning
  • Introduction to Organic Chemistry for Process and Chemical Engineers
  • Ecology for Engineers
  • Heat Transfer
  • Introduction to Biochemical Engineering
  • Chemical Reaction Engineering
  • Data Analysis for Process and Product Development

In the third year, students take core modules such as:

  • Fundamentals of Organic Chemistry
  • Applied Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics
  • Unit Operations and Particle Technology
  • Phase Equilibrium and Mass Transfer
  • Process Safety
  • Process Dynamics and Control
  • Organic Chemistry for Process and Chemical Engineering
  • Sustainability and Environmental Protection I
  • Food and Bioprocess Engineering
  • Pharmaceutical Process Validation
  • Chemical Process Equipment
  • Design, Integrity & Materials

Elective modules are also available, including:

  • Energy in Buildings
  • Pharmaceutical Engineering

Course Practicalities

The program involves 20-26 contact hours per week, divided into two semesters. Assessment is based on a combination of continuous assessment, project work, and written examinations. The final degree grade is based on a weighted combination of marks from the third and fourth years for the BE(Hons) degree, and from the fourth and fifth years for the ME degree.

Why Choose This Course

The Process and Chemical Engineering degree at UCC is accredited by the Institution of Chemical Engineers and Engineers Ireland. It offers small class sizes, excellent staff-student interaction, and strong links to various industries. The program includes a salaried eight-month work placement in industry, providing students with valuable hands-on experience and industry contacts.

Placement or Study Abroad Information

The five-year integrated ME program includes an eight-month salaried work placement in industry, based in Ireland or abroad. Opportunities also exist for academically strong students to spend a period in an institution abroad, receiving full credits for the work done towards their degree.

Skills and Careers Information

Graduates of this program can look forward to strong employment prospects in bio/pharmaceuticals, food and drinks, energy, environmental and technical services, medical devices, education, or finance and management. The degree is internationally accredited, and graduates are well-equipped to work in transdisciplinary teams across a wide range of industry and business sectors on a global basis.

Requirements

The minimum entry requirements include:

  • At least six subjects presented at Leaving Certificate
  • Minimum grade H4 in one subject, minimum grade H5 in one subject, and minimum grade O6/H7 in four other subjects
  • English and Irish are requirements for all programs unless the applicant is exempt from Irish
  • Lab Science subjects include Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Physics with Chemistry (Joint), and Agricultural Science
  • Technology can be substituted for a Lab Science subject

Fees and Costs

The State will pay the tuition fees for EU students who are eligible under the Free Fees Scheme. The annual student contribution and capitation fees are payable by the student. Non-EU students are required to pay the full tuition fee.

How to Apply

Irish and European applicants can apply via the CAO. Mature applicants can apply via the CAO by February 1. Non-EU applicants can apply online via the UCC Apply portal.
