Outline
The primary audiences for this course are those working in occupational health and safety across all sectors, including occupational health nurses and physicians, health promotion specialists, HR managers, workplace welfare officers, and quality managers. Secondary audiences include those interested in moving into the area of occupational health promotion, mental health, wellbeing, and risk prevention in the organizational and social work environment.
Module Objective
This module provides an applied perspective to the risk assessment and management of psychosocial risk factors at work and introduces contemporary psychosocial workplace issues and their management using case studies.
Module Content
The centerpiece of this module is the risk management approach for the assessment and management of stressful work characteristics, grounded in the UK management standards of work stressors and EU Frameworks and Directives for the management of psychosocial work factors. The module introduces a systematic approach to the development of effective policies and supporting procedures in work settings and for the control of work stressors.
Practicalities
- Penalties for late submission of course/project work: 10% of total marks deducted for up to 7 days late, 20% for up to 14 days late, and zero marks for 15 days late or more.
- The module will run for 4 weeks from 8th March 2026 to 4th April 2026.
Requirements
Candidates must meet one of the following criteria:
- A Level 8 honors primary degree in a relevant area with a minimum of second-class honors, grade 2, plus relevant professional experience.
- A minimum of a Diploma/Higher Diploma in Occupational Safety, Health, and Welfare with a minimum of second-class honors, grade 1, from UCC or an equivalent qualification from another institution, plus a minimum of two years of relevant professional work experience.
- Applicants with a minimum of three years of professional work experience in an associated area of Occupational Health, Safety, and Welfare may be invited for an interview.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Critically discuss aspects of the psychosocial work environment that affect health, safety, and welfare.
- Apply the risk management approach to the management of psychosocial hazards.
- Carry out a risk assessment of psychosocial work factors associated with the causation of ill health and injury.
- Evaluate European frameworks, policies, and procedures used to control work stressors.
- Develop strategies to effectively manage psychosocial factors at work using primary, secondary, and tertiary levels of interventions.
Technical Requirements
For online modules, students require access to a PC/Laptop with Windows 7 or later and Mac OSX 10.7.4, common plug-ins, MS Office or an equivalent suite, and a modern standards-compliant web browser.
English Language Requirements
Applicants who are non-native speakers of the English language must meet the university-approved English language requirements.
