Modern Languages and Linguistics (2 languages: French, German or Spanish) (MLang)

Overview

The Modern Languages and Linguistics (2 languages: French, German or Spanish) (MLang) program is a 4-year degree that combines undergraduate and postgraduate study in one program. Students study both linguistics and their 2 chosen languages throughout their degree.


Entry Requirements

  • A-levels: AAA including one named language
  • International Baccalaureate Diploma: Pass, with 36 points overall with 18 points at Higher Level, including 6 at Higher Level in one named language
  • BTEC: Distinction, Distinction in the BTEC National Extended Diploma plus A in one named language A level
  • GCSE requirements: Applicants must hold GCSE English language (or GCSE English) (minimum grade 4/C) and mathematics (minimum grade 4/C)
  • English language requirements: IELTS overall score of 6.5, with 6.0 in reading, writing, speaking, and listening

Course Structure

The program consists of four years of study, with the first year focusing on language skills and the history, politics, and culture of the societies where the languages are spoken. The second year introduces students to major themes in linguistics and allows them to choose modules that equip them with different ways to study cultures and languages. The third year is spent abroad, studying at a university in one or two countries. The fourth year focuses on master's-level modules, with students carrying out research for a dissertation.

Careers and Employability

Graduates can pursue careers in various fields, including translation, interpreting, digital copywriting, editorial assistance, journalism, copy editing, teaching, and more.


Fees and Funding

  • Tuition fees: £9,535 (UK students), £23,400 (EU and international students)
  • Living costs and accommodation costs are not included in the tuition fees
  • Bursaries and scholarships are available for eligible students
  • Funding for EU and international students is also available
