مخطط البرنامج

Degree Overview:

This MSc program in Advanced Mechanical Engineering aims to broaden students' knowledge of key areas within mechanical engineering and explore recent developments in the field. The program is designed to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge for a successful career in academia or industry.

Objectives:

  • Acquire knowledge and understanding of the state-of-the-art in one or more areas of mechanical engineering.
  • Develop transferable skills towards a career in academia or industry.
  • Deepen appreciation of traditional mechanical engineering topics such as aerotechnologies and engine performance.
  • Examine more recent developments in medical engineering, robotics, clean energy, and fire science.
  • Gain substantial expertise in research techniques through an extended individual project.

Outline:

Core Modules:

  • Professional Engineering Skills: Develops a range of skills necessary for the role of the professional engineer, including report writing, use and maintenance of an accurate log book, and data and error analysis.

Optional Modules:

  • Group A:
  • Metal Processing Technology: Extends knowledge of basic solid-mechanics concepts and methods to the modelling and analysis of viscoplastic flow and metal microstructure evolution.
  • Future Clean Transport Technology: Analyzes the design and underlying thermofluid and combustion processes in IC engines, and the design of hybrid, electric, and fuel cell powered vehicles.
  • Mechanical Transmission Technology: Explores the fundamental aspects of design and technology of mechanical transmission systems, and develops skills in various engineering science disciplines.
  • Group B:
  • Advanced Control:
  • Provides a working knowledge of modelling, analysis, and design methods in relation to continuous and discrete control systems.
  • Advanced Stress Analysis: Examines fundamental elasticity and plasticity theory, and their associated problems and solutions.
  • Applied Vibration Engineering: Uses the theoretical principles of vibration, and vibration analysis techniques, for the practical solution of vibration problems.
  • Combustion Science: Understands the scientific foundations of combustion and considers the challenges faced in power generation, propulsion, and fuel processing.
  • Computational Fluid Dynamics: Provides an appreciation of the governing equations for heat and fluid flow problems, and the numerical methods that cover domain and equation discretisation.
  • Nuclear Thermal Hydraulics: Offers a basic introduction to the thermal hydraulics of nuclear reactors, and associated issues in fluid mechanics.
  • Energy Systems: Deepens understanding of energy systems and their environmental impact, exploring the most common power and renewable energy systems.
  • Environmental and Applied Fluid Dynamics: Examines a number of environmental and applied topics in fluid dynamics, and the physical processes that govern a range of industrially and environmentally relevant applications.
  • Manufacturing Technology and Management B: Develops understanding of the operations of an advanced manufacturing machining facility and the diagnostic and improvement action tools used in all industries.

Research Project:

  • Students complete a research project based on an engineering topic typically at the forefront of active research in the department.
  • Work on the research project normally begins in October, when students discuss their project in detail with their chosen supervisor.
  • Students carry out experimental and/or computational work, produce a thesis, and give a seminar.
  • The written report should contain a detailed exposition of the work, in a style that prepares students for scientific writing.

Assessment:

  • Coursework: 15%
  • Examination: 35%
  • Research Project: 50%

Teaching:

  • Teaching and Learning Methods:
  • Group practical exercises
  • Laboratory work
  • Lectures
  • Virtual learning environment
  • Problem sheets
  • Tutorials
  • Workshop training

Careers:

  • A large proportion of graduates go on to find appropriate and challenging posts in industry, government, and universities at home and abroad.
  • PhD Scholarships are offered to the two best students in each of the four categories, covering full tuition fees as well as maintenance payments.

Other:

  • The program is delivered by the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London.
  • The minimum entry requirement is a First class Honours in science or engineering.
  • The Department often makes typical offers significantly higher than the minimum requirement.
  • The course is updated regularly to reflect the latest version of the curriculum.
  • It may not always be possible to take specific combinations of modules due to timetabling conflicts.
