Shipboard Safety Skill Set

Course Overview

The Shipboard Safety Skill Set (MARSS00008) is an accredited skill set that provides students with the skills and knowledge required to work safely on commercial vessels. The course covers survival techniques, safe working procedures for emergency situations on board a vessel, and how to abide by safe working procedures.

Course Outcome

Upon successful completion of this certification, students will receive a Statement of Attainment and be eligible to apply for a Certificate of Competency from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) for various roles, including:

• GPH General Purpose Hand
• Coxswain Grade 3 NC
• Coxswain Grade 2 NC
• Coxswain Grade 1 NC
• Sailing Master Coastal NC
• Sailing Master Offshore NC
• Master (Inland waters) NC
• Master <24 m NC
• Master <45 m NC
• Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 NC
• Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 NC
• Marine Engine Driver Grade 1 NC

Course Units

The course consists of four core units:

• MARF027: Apply basic survival skills in the event of vessel abandonment
• MARF028: Follow procedures to minimise and fight fires on board a vessel
• MARF029: Meet work health and safety requirements
• MARF030: Survive at sea using survival craft

Ways to Study

The course is delivered on campus at the Great Barrier Reef International Marine College in North Queensland. Students will learn face-to-face with a teacher in a classroom or simulated workplace environment.

Entry Requirements

It is highly recommended that students are aged 16 or older by the course commencement date.

Resources Required

Students will need access to a reliable internet connection, a computer with up-to-date software, and a recommended reading list and/or required textbooks. Students are also responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements in practical classes.
