MSc Criminal Justice and Investigation
Course Overview
The MSc Criminal Justice and Investigation course offers a range of contemporary criminal justice subject areas with a focus on the professional skills required within the criminal justice sector at a local and national level. Developing key analytical and professional skills such as investigatory skills, complex information management and analysis, writing and drafting skills, is at the centre of the programme design.
Students will gain a detailed insight and understanding of key principles of criminal justice practice within significant agencies such as the police, probation, prison and the court system. Perspectives include that of perpetrator, victim-survivor, practitioner and public and will be underpinned by research informed teaching and knowledge.
The course is suitable for both those wishing to undertake further study in criminal justice and investigatory disciplines, as well as those looking to undertake additional work specific skills development.

Course Details
Work Placements
The programme offers a work-based learning module for those students employed in a relevant professional sector for which they receive credit, and an internship opportunity for full-time students. All students complete a professionally focused extended research project.

Taught elements of the course take place on campus in Winchester.
Serving and Retired Police Officers and Staff
You may be able to receive academic credit towards this course based on your prior experience and learning in the police service. The University of Winchester recommend using the College of Policing’s Credit Estimator to see what credit you could have already achieved.
Assessment
Our validated courses may adopt a range of means of assessing your learning. An indicative, and not necessarily comprehensive, list of assessment types you might encounter includes essays, portfolios, supervised independent work, presentations, written exams, or practical performances.

Modules
This programme has received University approval for curriculum development and is now in the final stages of the validation process. Some elements of the curriculum could be altered at this stage such as inclusion of optional module content, assessment types, module names and indicative curriculum content.

Entry Requirements
- Normally a first or second-class Honours degree
- Normally a first or second-class Honours degree or professional experience in the area of study
- If English is not your first language: IELTS 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in writing or equivalent

Additional Tuition Fee Information
If you are a UK student starting your degree in January / September 2025, the first year will cost you £9,775.
Additional Costs
- Core texts: Multiple copies of core text are held within the library and e-books are identified where possible, however due to limited availability students are recommended to purchase a copy for their own use. Indicative cost is £100.
- Travel: Students will incur travel costs on placements to organisations, where primary research will be conducted for their work-based learning module and final dissertation. This will be in the second semester of study. Indicative cost is £100-200 (the Department will provide £50 per student toward these costs).

Career Prospects
The programme is designed to prepare students for a range of criminological careers, specifically focused policing and security, research and academic careers.
Programme Leader
Dr. Gopala Sasie Rekha is a Lecturer in Criminology in the Department of Policing, Criminology, and Forensics at the University of Winchester. She obtained her PhD in Sociology, Social Policy, and Criminology from the University of Southampton in 2022. Her PhD dissertation, titled “Life After Trafficking: The Social Reintegration Process of Victims of Sex Trafficking and Their Families in Indonesia,” laid the foundation for her current research and teaching at the intersection of criminology.
