Overview

The BSc (Hons) Social Work degree programme at Birmingham City University is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge required to become a professional social worker. The course is divided into three years, with a focus on practice-based learning and academic study.


Course Structure

The course is structured into three years, with each year consisting of a combination of academic study and practice-based learning.


Year One

In the first year, students will study six modules that introduce them to the fundamentals of social work, including anti-discriminatory practice, law and social policy, and human growth and development. The final two modules of the year focus on developing core communication and assessment skills.


Year Two

In the second year, students will build on their knowledge base with five modules that cover topics such as safeguarding, social work theories, and research methods. The year also includes a 70-day placement in a practice setting.


Year Three

In the final year, students will develop their evidence-based skills and knowledge of law and policy. The course features a 100-day placement in a statutory social work setting.


Entry Requirements

To be eligible for the course, applicants must have:


  • 120 UCAS Tariff points
  • GCSE English Language or English Literature and GCSE Maths at grade C/4 or above
  • A Level, BTEC, or other level 3 qualifications in a relevant subject
  • A satisfactory occupational health check and an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check
  • A Social Work declaration check

Applicants must also complete an interview as part of the selection process.


Fees and Funding

The tuition fees for the course are:


  • £9,535 per year for UK students (2026/27)
  • £18,570 per year for international students (2026/27)

Students may be eligible for a NHS Social Work Bursary to help with study and living costs.


Employability

The course is highly regarded by employers, and graduates are eligible to register with Social Work England. The experience gained on the course provides excellent employment prospects, with many graduates going on to work in local authorities, voluntary and independent organisations.


Placements

Placements take place across a range of agencies, including local authorities, voluntary and independent organisations, in a variety of settings such as residential, day care, schools, hospitals, and Social Work teams. Students will undertake a minimum of 170 days of placements over the three years of the course.


Facilities and Staff

The course is based at the City South campus in Edgbaston, with facilities that include a home environment flat and mock hospital wards. The staff team includes experienced social workers and academics who are committed to providing high-quality teaching and support.
