Overview

This Certificate of Credit Radiographic Imaging (Projectional) course introduces students to the foundation of projectional radiographic practice (plain film imaging) for the appendicular skeleton, thorax, and abdomen.

Course Description

This course covers the foundations of radiographic practice for the appendicular skeleton, thorax, and abdomen. It enables students to gain skills in assessing images in terms of skeletal and soft tissue anatomy, together with appropriate quality measures.

Module Details

Radiographic Imaging (Projectional)

This module introduces students to the foundation of radiographic practice (appendicular, thorax, and abdomen) and enables them to assess images in terms of skeletal and soft tissue anatomy and appropriate technical factors.

• Module learning outcomes:
  1. Explain a range of standard skeletal radiographic techniques and identify, evaluate, and describe normal skeletal anatomy associated with radiographic appearances.
  2. Demonstrate a range of standard radiographic techniques.
• Module content:
  1. Underpinning anatomy and physiology: bone structure, function, and metabolism.
  2. Osteology & Arthrology of the Appendicular skeleton and Thorax.
  3. Radiographic terminology.
  4. Radiographic technique.
  5. Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology to image the area of interest.
  6. Clinical indications for imaging; making informed choices and justification.
  7. Considerations of IR(ME)R (2017) and IRR17 legislation.
  8. Normal radiographic appearances & image evaluation.
  9. Introduction to imaging in theatre.

Assessment Method

• Online exam
• Practice document (reflective learning log) where students record their 240 hours of observed practice, confirmed by a clinical educator.

Careers

This short course assists students in their role as an Assistant Practitioner within the imaging department. It enables them to achieve the competence in projectional radiography required to apply to the BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography Apprenticeship (Progression) programme.

Entry Requirements

• Current employment as an Assistant Practitioner in a radiography department within the UK.
• Ability to obtain a minimum of 240 hours in projection radiography.
• Named workplace mentor to oversee and supervise practice development.
• Manager's approval form completed by the line manager.

Fees and Funding

• 2024/25 for new entrants: £875
• 2025/26 for new entrants: £925
