Foundation Year in Health and Life Sciences

Overview

The Foundation Year is a pre-degree access programme that will provide you with a solid basis for future undergraduate study at the University of Bradford. This course is designed for students who do not have the necessary academic qualifications for registration directly on to a degree course.


The Foundation Year offers an introductory grounding in your chosen discipline and equips you with the study and interpersonal skills necessary for effective undergraduate study.


Successful completion of this programme will enable you to progress to a range of degree programmes in forensic and medical sciences, chemistry, applied biomedical science, archaeology, nursing, occupational therapy and public health.

Qualification Requirements

  • A levels: DDE.
  • T levels: Pass (D or E).
  • BTEC Extended Diploma: MPP.
  • Applicants on Access Programmes: 64 UCAS points.
  • International Baccalaureate Requirements: 64 UCAS points plus Higher Level grade 3 or Standard Level grade 4 in English.
  • Plus minimum of:
    • GCSE English grade C/grade 4 (equivalents accepted).
    • Some of our courses require Maths and/or Science grade C/grade 4 (equivalents accepted).

Additional Entry Requirements

If you are a mature applicant (aged 21 and over), you will be eligible to apply for this course with level 2 qualifications (or GCSE equivalents). You will also need to provide a written statement, and will be interviewed as part of the process.


English Language Requirements

Minimum IELTS at 6.0 or the equivalent.


Curriculum

The Foundation Year provides an excellent introduction to university studies. It equips you with essential knowledge, understanding, and transferable skills. It supports your growth as an independent learner and prepares you for success at university and in your future endeavours.


The modules you will study during the Foundation Year will depend on the degree you wish to progress to.


All students will study the following core modules:


  • Academic Skills
  • Practical Skills
  • Maths and Statistics
  • Introduction to Biology
  • Anatomy and Physiology

In addition to the core modules, students who wish to progress onto degree programmes in Biomedical Sciences, Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic Science, Forensic Science, Forensic Anthropology, Applied Biomedical Science, and Forensic and Medical Sciences, will study:


  • Introduction to Chemistry

In addition to the core modules, students who wish to progress onto degree programmes in Occupational Therapy or Nursing can choose one of the following optional modules:


  • Introduction to Chemistry
  • Introduction to Public Health

Teaching, Learning and Assessment

You will learn alongside your peers through lectures, workshops, practical lab sessions, and simulation classes. Personal tutorials will provide individual support. Assessment methods will vary and include coursework, presentations, skills logs, and examinations.
