Course Content

Year 1

  • Foundations of Mathematics (20 Credits) Core
    • Introduction to the foundational language and notation used throughout mathematics
    • Topics include mathematical logic, set theory, proofs, number systems, functions, elementary number theory, symmetry groups, etc.
  • Differential Equations with their Applications (20 Credits) Core
    • Introduction to the essential theory and numerical methods used in solving ordinary and partial differential equations (ODEs and PDEs)
    • Topics include review of calculus techniques, methods of differentiation and integration, and applications to real-world problems
  • Analysis and Linear Algebra (40 Credits) Core
    • Introduction to both analysis and linear algebra
    • Topics include sequences and series, functions and their continuity and differentiability, and linear transformations between vector spaces
  • Probability and Statistics with Applications to Data Science and Machine Learning (20 Credits) Core
    • Introduction to probability, data, and statistics
    • Topics include set-theoretic approach to probability, combinatorics, conditional probability, independence, and Bayes' Theorem
  • Computation, Communication and Employability (20 Credits) Optional
    • Development of essential transferable skills for employability
    • Topics include algorithms, programming, research and writing skills, and LaTeX

Year 2

  • Linear Programming and Optimisation (20 Credits) Core
    • Study of the theoretical background behind linear programming methods
    • Topics include canonical forms of linear programming problems, integer linear programming, and game theory
  • Introduction to Stochastic Processes (20 Credits) Core
    • Introduction to stochastic processes and their applications
    • Topics include Markov chains, random walks, Brownian motion, and stochastic differential equations
  • Analysis (20 Credits) Core
    • Development of a rigorous theory of convergence, differentiation, and integration of real-valued functions
    • Topics include uniform continuity, uniform convergence, and the Darboux integral
  • Theory & Applications of Geometry (20 Credits) Core
    • Introduction to major geometrical topics taught at undergraduate level
    • Topics include Euclidean geometry, solid geometry, and spherical geometry
  • Graph Theory and Combinatorics (20 Credits) Option
    • Introduction to graph theory and combinatorics
    • Topics include trees, graph connectivity, networks, Eulerian and Hamiltonian graphs, and recurrence relations
  • Professional work placement/Language module/Term abroad (40 Credits) Option
    • Opportunity to take part in a professional work placement, language module, or term abroad

  • Quality Control (20 Credits) Core
    • Introduction to quality control and statistical theory and methods
    • Topics include methods and philosophy of statistical process control, control charts, and process capability studies
  • Group Theory (20 Credits) Core
    • Study of groups and their actions on sets and geometric objects
    • Topics include groups, subgroups, cosets, normal subgroups, quotient groups, and homomorphisms
  • Applied Calculus and Partial Differential Equations (20 Credits) Core
    • Development of a rigorous theory of convergence, differentiation, and integration of real-valued functions
    • Topics include vector calculus, partial differential equations, and the theory of and techniques for solving PDEs
  • Numerical Analysis (20 Credits) Core
    • Introduction to numerical techniques for solving mathematical problems
    • Topics include solving nonlinear equations, finding roots, Newton iteration, and related methods
  • Mathematics of AI (20 Credits) Option
    • Introduction to the key mathematical concepts and skills essential for understanding and developing modern ML and AI algorithms
    • Topics include theory from calculus, linear algebra, optimisation, probability, and statistics
  • Computational Linear Algebra (20 Credits) Option
    • Introduction to numerical techniques for solving linear algebra problems efficiently and reliably
    • Topics include norms, limits, and condition numbers, errors, accuracy, and floating-point arithmetic
  • Mathematical Project (40 Credits) Core
    • Opportunity to explore deeply an area of mathematics of your choice
    • Development of skills of self-discipline and project management, and study of the art of mathematical writing and communication

How You'll Learn

  • In-person study with 9-12 hours of contact time per week
  • Independent study with 25-30 hours per week expected
  • Assessment through problem sheets, online quizzes, exams, presentations, and group-work projects
